Anybody here hear of or play Eve Online? It's a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG). If you've ever played Wing Commander or Freelancer then you will definetly like it. It's a great game, they have some bugs and such as it just came out recently. Most MMORPG have a lot of trouble in the begining but this game has had minimal compared to other MMORPGs (anarchy online for example).
Anyway I was beta testing it and now I'm playing retail and it's pretty good - Graphics, music and gameplay are all great. The way it works is you have a player character and you start as part of an NPC (non-player character) corporation (corporations are the main idea of this game). You can do various things to gain money and get better ships, weapons, etc. You will eventually find a PC (player character) corporation that you'll want to join. You can't really be a loner unless you're hardcore, you'll want to join a corp to work together and everything.
Right now the market is stimulated by NPC corps that make and sell ships/equipment/goods etc. This is all phasing out though and soon only PC corps will manufacture everything. This game basically has no limit and is really interesting. If you need more info post here, it's a great game to try, you'll be hooked :).
And if anybody is playing it right now my character name is "djrouz" and I'm in Tanner Industries Corp (Caldari). |

Yep, I'm most definately an Eve Online fan. Been following it for a year and one of the founding members of Oracle Corporation. Let me just add to what rowzbay mentioned about the game features:
- The game is just plain stunning to look at. If you don't believe me, well...

:eyes:
- There's only one server cluster for the whole world (it's in London); and you can connect and play from any where in the world with a 56k modem. (I play from Australia with no dramas).
- There are 5000 systems available to explore, each with on average about 5-10 planets in each system. If you wanted to travel from one edge of the galaxy to the other it would take you at least a day. I doubt you'd make it though - the outer reaches are dangerous.
- Over 60+ unique ships available in ship size catagories frigates, cruisers, industrials, battleships and titans. Over 3000 unique ship components to fit to your ship.
- Player driven trading market as rowzabay mentioned - the best feature as far as I'm concerned. Advancement in the game is based on money, not experience points. And all transactions happen in the stations that orbit the planets, along with news viewing, ore refining, ship buying, gambling in casinos (not in yet), researching and other stuff - can't remeber everything.
- Skill advancement is based on real world time, not repetative tasks; and you can train your skills while offline ,but you can only train one skill at a time. You can also train any skill you want so changing from a scientist/researcher to a combat pilot type can be done mid-game without too much trouble; you only need the money to buy the skills.
- If you die you better have bought yourself a clone before hand. If your ship is destroyed you don't die straight away, you're just ejected into space in a life pod, which can then warp to the nearest station if your attacker doesn't decide to be bad and blow that up aswell.
- You can play the Freelance pilot no problem. I did in beta and made a fortune from tradng weapons. I'd say it's probably more difficult in retail tho now that the NPC's have dwindled.
- Music is great and wouldn't be surprised if someone remixed some of them into Trance Anthems :) - spacey sound.
- Corporations: when you get bored playing freelance the game is designed to accomodate grouping. Joining and creating a corp is the only way you'll ever get to fly a Titan, or buy a Station. The momentous galaxy influencing stuff is all based around the corporations of Eve.
- Then there is the story. Basically you can start as a member of one of four races, all human - no cheesy star trek plastic mold head gear aliens in this game. There are the nomadic and unrefined Minmatar, the arrogant and powerful Ammar who have enslaved half the Minmatar race; there are the refined, freedom loving and pleasure seeking Gallante, and finally the technologically proficient and money covetting Caldari. There is also a fifth race: the mysterious and technologically superior Jove. What exactly the Joves motivations are no one knows...
Negative Aspects of Game
- Some people argue the only way to make money is to mine. Well I say that's complete baloney as I've never mined and am quite wealthy. Probably mining is the most obvious way, but if you find it boring don't do it. Good thing about the game is that intelligent play is rewarded, and lazy brain dead play is not.
- Bugs are there but they get fixed quickly. Game is slowly coming out of that chaotic stage that happens at the start of any MMORPG. Compared to other games it's been a relatively smooth ride so far.
- Content is lacking at this stage. If you expect a story to be brewing in the background it's not happening yet. They say the epic back story will start in the next month or two. Also planets are fairly barren things. No planet landing, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned because you'd never be able to realistically populate them; but even activity around planets is not there so they seem like large empty spheres. You'd expect this around isolated moons but not around capital worlds. They are adding all this a however. It's only going to get better.
And that's about most of it. :D |

Don't like the effort of piloting for real? Dogfighting is hella fun, and docking heavy tows takes true talent. If it's not your type of game whatever, but I'd rather fly my ship like I was there :p |
