It's a stadium gig in Melbourne.
escee
what time do things usually close in melbourne?

ive noticed that most of your gigs have 6-close with a local playing. In perth we have 4-6 and thats it, it will finish at 6 or 6:30 depending what club its at.
Renegade
The big events usually end at 7.00-7.30am.

Then there's the recovery parties....

The Melbourne Slinky goes from 10-7,
Not too long now, this time tomorrow we will be tearing up at Melbourne park.:D :D :D :D

Well, here goes nothing... :p

Arrived with friend Jess in tow at about 12:30am, and found that all arenas were far from packed. After TT, it was a pleasant surprise ;) Sound (aside from deck problems during Signum's set) and lighting were all top notch. On to the tunes:

Checked out Slinky resident Dave Lea by sitting in the Vodafone stands, and was stunned by his mediocrity. Poor mixing, and cliched hard house/trance schlock. Stay at home next time, Dave!

Then toddled over to the Renaissance stage, where I was astounded by the best progressive set I've ever seen. Zabiela is where it's at: mind-blowing skills, bouncy fat-bassed prog with superb atmosphere and occasional outbursts of serene melody. Simply the best progressive set I've ever seen. :D

Dropped in on Lisa Lashes at one point during Zabiela's set, but it just didn't compare. I enjoyed her stuff more than I usually enjoy hard house, but in the end it was just too much, and not a patch on Renaissance. At this point, Vodafone Arena was comfortably full, to the point where EVERYONE who wanted to had space to dance. :)

Back to Zabiela to dance away most of the night, then into the main arena again to check out the boys from Signum. I expected a really fun trance set, nothing mind-blowing, and got exactly what I expected. Tracks included in their set that I have managed to recall ;):

Ferry Corsten - Indigo
Signum ft. Katana - 3rd Dimension
Solar Stone - Solarcoaster (Midway Remix)
Signum - Second Wave [record skipped during breakdown argh :(, but still OMFG I almost died]
Laura Turner - Soul Deep (Signum Remix) [Dear Lord, WHAT a tune. This was the highlight of my night; I love this track to bits]
Mr Sam vs Fred Baker - Forever Waiting (M.I.K.E Remix) [awwwww yeah]
DJ Cor Fijneman ft. Jan Johnston - Venus (DJ Tiesto Remix)
Signum - What Ya Got 4 Me

not sure:
Matanka - Lost in a Dream (Push Remix)
The Gift - Love Angel (M.I.K.E. Remix)

There was also a DJ Precision-type tune with a staggered bassline and massive breakdown in it that was played in the last 30 mins of their set -- help anyone? Killer track. In fact there were about 4 tracks that I couldn't ID and would dearly love to. It was banging (not hard) uplifting trance and rippling synths all over the place: just the way I like it. Mixing was nothing special, and at times I swear some of our TAs could have done better, but I expected that. A really sweet tracklist, and heaps of fun :)

Cheers to Wasted_Space, who was utterly rocking it to Zabiela and the Cat-man. Respect to the prog-TAs! Also to Stipsy, who I saw briefly during Signum's set :) Hope you can ID some tracks for me!

Decided to go at (literally) the last minute when my mate said he wanted to go, but I don't know what we were thinking. We're both ill and we both have exams next week. He fell asleep in my car at about 4.30 in the end.

Spent most of the time in the prog room in the end. Wasn't in the mood for the harder stuff in the main room (saw about 15 minutes of Dave Lea - doesn't go well with the Codoral I had in me :D).

Zabiela was bloody brilliant. I thought I wasn't really up for a night out, but that dirty techy-housey stuff he played at the start was perfect to get me in the mood. Plenty of atmospheric and breaksy stuff along the way too, but still very dancable. Oh, and can we talk turntablism? me, the amount of effort he puts in is incredible. Rarely a point where he wasn't busy on the mixer/turntables. Bloody flawless and very impressive. I can just remember thinking "James, don't even bother buying decks. You could practice for 9,000 years and still not even come close to this guy. Give up now".

Only tracks I can remember spotting (I recognised a few others, so hopefully I can add to this):

Schatrax - Misspent Years (Silocone Soul's Darkroom Dub)
Lee Coombs vs Meat Katie - Two Men on a Trip
Dave Brennan - Drink Deep

Cattaneo was good too. Slightly different style to Zabiela (more straight up prog) but kept me dancing till 5.45 when I left. Only tracks I can remember:

Infusion vs Kate Bush - Running up that Hill :eyes:
C&M Productions feat Marcel - True House (Saaed's Remix)

Plus I'm pretty sure he played Schatrax - Misspent Years as well, but it might have been the Funk D'Void remix.

Saw a bit of Phil K as well (walked in just in time to hear the Momu mix of Cass - Mind Rewind --> Luke Chable - After the Storm :D) but the attendence up there was ing pathetic. Here's one of Melbourne's best DJs, gaining international recognition with his Breaks mix on Balance 004 and a nomination to do the next GU Nu-Breed and there were like 50 bloody people in that room. Tops. Then of course, when he pulls a Pappa, moves to London and makes it big internationally, he'll be headlining Slinky in 2-3 years and be playing in front of 6,000 people who refused to see him when he wasn't a headliner. I think sometimes we don't know how good we've got it. :-/

Anyway, it was a good night even if top-class international DJs were forced to play in the corridors of our tennis centre. Don't want to come across as grumpy but..... y'know. :)
