The interview
Some people in the Netherlands know that you are a resident dj at Club Q in zwolle but where did it all started en how did you came in contact with dj'ing?
It started in the year 1997, a friend of mine was making housemusic with a music program (fasttracker), i liked it so much and got my own program. In that same year i watched a tv program regularly, called 'the dj's' on the Dutch music channel TMF. I like it so much, the dj's, all the party people, just the whole scene, so after about 6 months i decided to buy my own turntables (2 numark beltdrive turntables), and a mixing panel (stage line).
Is there a dj that has inspired you and do you have a favorite dj?
I don't really have a favorite Dj, but a few years ago i came in contact with Dj Marcella and, well, she inspired me in a way I guess. And also Dj's like Erick E and Lucien Foort inspired me in a way, they still do...
How would you describe your music style?
Hard to describe, i just got my own style, but: Uplifting Progressive/Techhouse with tribal influences, is the best way to describe it i guess..
As said before you are one of the three residents from Club Q. (besides c-jay and dj san (the guy behind Solid Sessions) Club Q is a new club and it recently had his 2nd anniversary.
What do you think of club Q and the other 2 resident dj’s.
Club Q (the Q) is a great club with style, it has an excellent atmosphere and a super quality sound system. The best club in the east of Holland, i'm sure..! The place where i really feel at home. Great people, great guest Dj's, i can't mention anything that's wrong
What do i think of our other 2 resident Dj's: Well, we all have our own part in making this great club to what it is.
Dj C Jay, always busy with his own record store (the sessions), a very hard working man, always playing the newest house music. i say: 'respect'
Dj San, a man with a great passion for music, also very hard working, producing and remixing all kind of tracks, playing all over the world. A Dj who gets the word 'respect' from me, twice..
How many demos did you send to the Q club before you had your first gig in the club?
I have send the Q 2 demo's. One before it opened, and one just after. After getting in contact with the owner (a great guy), i got my first gig on a sunday.
What do you think of the people that come to club Q?
Like i said; great people. These people come for the music, they know what they get and you can see that they enjoy it!
Club Q is the best club we have here in the eastern side of Holland why aren’t there more clubs like club Q here in this part of Holland?
The most partyminded people will come to the western part of Holland (Amsterdam etc.) ' where i all happens ' .. they think! If there is a 'club' in the east
it most likely is a disco. A place for the more 'simpleminded' (no offence..) who will party with every kind of music, as long as they have beer and lots of it...
So to answer the question: there are less party minded people in the east, and if there are any, they will go to Amsterdam and so on (and the Q of course). There is a minority of commercial party people, who like everything. So when you have more of these people, their will be less clubs like Q ..
Last year you won the Twix Talent room. The final was at the big and highly acclaimed indoor party Innercity. So what do you think about the Twix talent room and do you get more bookings because you have won the final?
The twix talent room is a great way to get your career a boost. Of course this won't ' just happen ' you have to do it yourself, with lot's of energy. But once you get there it sure helps. You get more media attention, doors that where closed before are now opened, and you get more appreciation/respect for what you do..
I won't say that I immediately have an abnormal increase of my bookings, but on the long term it is...
Dj quintin together with Lucien Foort
How was it to play the final at such a large party with so many people and with so many big names in the line up?
A wonderful experience. This is what it's all about. So many party people, an enormous vibe goes trough the whole area.. just great.
The price of winning the twix talent room is that you will play at an id&t party in 2003.
Do you already know at which id&t party you will play and are you expecting to play at more big parties? (we all know what happened with DJ joop who won the talent room in 2001 with gigs at trance-energy and mysterland)
Mysteryland will be my first big performance in 2003. I really look forward to it! Of course i can't tell that i expect to play at more big parties, but let's say the way it looks at his moment is very positive..;-)
The Dutch party scene is really big and has a lot of big indoor parties. Some of these parties are becoming really commercial. What’s your opinion about the Dutch party scene and how do you think the Dutch party scene will develop in the future?
The Dutch partyscene is getting bigger and bigger. It's hard to say how it will develop. But i hope it won't grow too much, because we can already see now, that there are just too many party's. That's not good for the clubs.
Do you have any tips for dj’s who just started and want to become a famous dj?
Stay up to date about/with the dancescene (read artikels, visit internet etc.)
Try to get in contact with dj's, party organisers, promotors and so on, by visiting party's and clubs.
Practice hard
Start producing (every dj nowadays has to make music)
Make sure you got a big bag of money ;)
Which party was the best party you played at so far?
Innercity
If you were throwing a party which dj’s would play at your party?
Lucien Foort, Erick E, Harry Lemon, Sander Kleinenberg
What’s your favorite record at the moment and what’s your all time favorite record?
Got a few favorites;
-Paul Hamill, acces psycatron
-D. Ramirez, bounce your Dj
-11th street, plastic love
- many more records...
All time favorite?? Haven't got one, i think... I like a lot!
Are you also producing records?
Yes, my first record will be released around july 2003
What kind of tools do you use producing records?
Cubase vst
all kind of software plug-ins
pulsar xtc soundcard
keyboards
pc, 2 screens, etc etc
What’s your favorite tool to produce?
Drum boxes
Is there a dj/producer with who you want to work together to make a record?
I really like to make records on my own, so i can do whatever i like. But i would like it if Harry lemon makes a remix.
Are you a full time dj or do you go to school or do you work or something else?
I'm a full time Dj, but also do promotional work for the Q, and some other party's. And i design partyflyers
Are you willing to give op your “work/school/relationship” to become famous?
I just make sure i won't have to give anything up. But i already 'gave up' school. At the age of 17 (now i'm 20) I finished my 'Havo', and felt that it was enough..
What can we expect from you in the near future (bookings, track etcetera)
Soon my first track will be released.
I am booked for:
Promissez (april) (www.promissez.nl),
Outdoor national festival Zwolle (5 may),
Gielen solo (may),
Boatparty cruises de luxe Amsterdam (may),
Bloomingdale (in the summer),
Mysteryland (august)
and busy with the loveparade and heineken ffwd, but that's not confirmed yet..
