I wouldn't really know, maybe it's just because I've seen your writing for quite a while now on forums. They feel genuine and it's obvious you have a passion for it. A particular highlight, or one that springs to mind, is your review of The Middle of Nowhere. I just like that style, infusing personal passion and experience within your review. Reviews I read on various blogs and places like RA just aren't the same. I get a little exhausted with the endless thesaurus hunting those guys seem to do to describe what they're hearing. Or how many times they can drop "imprint" in a single review.

Well seriously: thanks. It means a lot when I see that people are reading and enjoying it, and perhaps laughing at some of the jokes. I basically write it like nobody is reading because I don't expect anyone to be. What I meant is more that there's no house style or remotely professional standard to what I write, and when I look back at some of the shit I've written I just think it reads terribly. Some of the reviews of really bland and ummemorable ambient records, for example. The whole idea was just to write honestly, which I think works better than faking journalistic integrity all the time. Sometimes I might know loads about an album and have a proper article to write (like if I ever get around to reviewing Northern Exposure), and sometimes I might not know shit and not get any kind of inspiration from it. So the quality and style of each entry can vary dramatically.
Anyway, enough of this self-indulgent bullshittery. Back to Vince Watson.

oh man.
Just feeling compelled to ask this: The album sounds to me more like some sort of melodic house.
I mean, isn't stuff like this detroit techno?

No, that's electro. If there's breakbeats and futuristic acid sounds it's generally electro. Although detroit electro and techno tend to use the same string/pad/chord sounds and detroit techno is not always straight 4/4. But it's sort of like with techno and house, sometimes classifying is not that easy but if you listen to this stuff you'll get a feel for what is what.
And yes, this album is sort-of housey (I guess because of how jazzy it sounds) but I'd still classify it as techno.

This album is not Detroit techno. VW's non-album material is more Detroity. I called it "jazzy techno" but it really doesn't make any difference if you label it house.
I generally classify techno as "Detroit" techno when it has a retro-futurist vibe, lots of vintage/analogue-sounding synths and a melancholic edge.
Jack you should check out a (newer) producer from Japan called Takuya Yamashita. Recently had an EP on Funk D'Void's Outpost label and his generally along the same lines as VW.

...yea anyhow, this is the Vince I really like:
One thing I dont really like is that he's using soft down tempo sounds and hooks but mixing them in with a techno type backdrop, usually at an uptempo pace. I think Vince's melodies could stand on their own as downtempo or ambient works. The club-music aspect of his production feels forced to me. To me it seems his melodies come to him easily while composing and then he has to lay the kick drum and bassline in as an afterthought.

Lovely album throughout.
A bit different from his usual, but a wonderful and very warm vibe.
