wow another weekend of madness complete! back at work today and hurting a bit....but i think im in better shape than last year lol
Day 1: The Hangover
Rolled in to the festival late since I was a hurting mess from the pre-DEMF bbq i threw at my place. This was my first time staying at the GreekTown hotel and casino and I really liked the hotel. The inside is rather pimp and it has free wifi AND internet! Location wise, its a tad far from the festival, however it is close to a bunch of restaurants in Greektown.
Rolled in to the BP stage at around 6-630 to hear dOP. While there was tons of energy at the stage, I could not stand their music. Made my way to the main stage where Derrick Carter tore the place a new one. I had a great time during his set. I think this was my first time seeing him (I used to love him when I was more into house). Checked out Damin Lazarus for a bit and what he played wasnt bad.. Afterwards, I roamed a bit, caught some of Squillace....and waiting in anticipation for Troxler vs. Gerber. Their set was . I couldnt stop dancing and it was the best set of the weekend.
Regrets: Tale of Us, Benoit & Sergio, Mike Huckaby
Day 1.5: Minimal Time
Went to the Cigar lounge for the Down & Out party w/ Troy Pierce, Marc Houle, and Magda. The place was really good and had a wicked beer selection. Was nice to get my hands on some Negro Modelo. The event was in the basement portion and was 1/3 the size of FW. Super intimate.
Troy Pierce was pretty good, however I was a bit disappointed since I've listened to a few excellent sets of him lately and was hoping for the same (stuttgart set on soundcloud). Marc Houle delivered one of the best live PAs afterwards and couldnt stop watching the guy in action. His set rivaled the one he played @ FW a few years ago. Magda followed on with another great set. The sets were more techno than minimal, but I still got my minimal fix that night
Day 1.75: Fuck the Cops
Attempted to hit Circo Loco....but the cops were shutting it down when we arrived Went back to town, had food and hit the sack.
Day 2: Festival time
Once again rolled into the festival late Caught the tail end of Wolf & Lamb which was quite good. Too bad it really picked up only at the end.
Maceo Plex was awesome at BP. First time seeing him and he played much harder than I expected.
Then I went over to Josh Wink at the main stage and he sucked HARD! Dude, you are on the main stage for a reason....own up to it. He was my biggest let down of the weekend.
Marco Carola.....almost made me cry because of the sound issues. His set a few years ago was unbelievable and I was dying to see him rip up the main stage. He got really pissed at the staff and turned off the music a few times. 30mins later the sound got fixed and he layed it proper and had me smiling all over again. 1hr30 is too short for him. Min 2hours pleaseeee.
Loco Dice was good. Was weird to see him up there instead of the lower part of the stage. Almost looked pretentious.
Public enemy...was kinda cool...but just didnt belong. Enjoyed the vibe....music notsomuch. Left early to prepare for afterparties.
Day 2.5: Techno Heaven
Wasnt planning on doing an afterparty.....but ended up at St. Andrews for the KMS party. Tickets were $60 at the door ....but managed to get in for free and looking back, this was worth the $60. This was the techno I came to detroit for. Ben Sims, Carl Craig, and Kevin Saunderson murdered the place detroit shooting style. I cant recall sweating this much ever. The lighting and sound were top notch. I think we left around 5....god knows.
Day 3: Old Miami Baby
Last year I popped my Old Miami cherry and swore I'd never miss it again. Arrived at 9:30 and left at around 4:30. Sun, beers, killer music, and tons of friends....and too much beers!
I love Old Miami because the lineup is never really released and it never disapoints. I've asked ton of people and nobody could tell me who was playing.
As far I know, I go to see:
- CK
- Unknown??
- Benoit & Sergio
- Maya Jane Coles
- dOP
then left before Maceo Plex got on.
Day 3: The end of the festival
Monday had the best lineup at the festival....and again I didnt see as much as I wanted to. Was too drunk from Old Miami that I almost wanted to leave by 7 lol. Then all of a sudden my mood went back to party mode and stayed
Started by alternating between Chris Liebing and Voorn vs. Fanciulli. Stayed longer for Liebing. It took him a while to get me in the mood...but finally delivered. I expected more..
Kevin Saunderson killed it again and I finally witnessed Spastik being dropped live <3 <3 <3.
Stacey Pullen was KILLING afterwards. (I tried to give a chance to Jeff mills and what came out of the speakers was a big pile of dooooo). Left at 11ish as I couldnt stand up any longer. Was planning on hitting up Carola afterparty....but decided to be wise and call it a night.
Random Thoughts
-People were really mangled on Saturday.
-Best weather at DEMF ever
-Sunday was really busy
-Monday was dead at the festival. The emptiest ive ever seen.
-Main stage had no sponsors...used to be vitamin water. Wonder how much that affected finances.
-Was livid at the sound situation for Carola. Cant believe it took em 30mins to get it corrected. Even the sound was super low for Wink.
-Bring back the beer carts spread out everywhere
-Lineup lacked techno and minimal
-This is the year ive spent the least time at the festival. I was at afterparties longer than the festival
