Fun with white noise!

As the title states...I'm learning how to have fun with white noise! (without using youtube or other "how-to's)

Basically my goal is to come up with as many of my own white noise FX as I can using the same "instrument" and as few filters as possible...(Because I suck at FX and this is good practice) One of the specific FX on 'to-do list' is the fizzly bottle rocket sound that Tiesto uses in many of his tracks. (Which I'm sure there's a tut for but I'd rather figure it out myself...)

The reason for this venture... is due to the over-prolific nature of said white-noise in basically every current trance track that I hear nowadays...(Hell, some of the tracks I hear sound like they're comprised entirely of white noise...but well placed white noise actually is nice...so I'm learning how to do it )

Here are 2 examples of some fun things I've come up with using Nexus's "Blue noise" preset and a simple filter combo.

Firecrackers! (I can change the rate and randomness at which they explode, but that requires automation...and I'm lazy)

http://www.mediafire.com/?e4110zzw9gdqlk8

Wind/Sea... I feel that this comes as close to real as I can emulate.
I actually... did do a bit of automation, adjusting the Q slightly up/down to dictate severity of the wind...Also used the built in BP filter on sidechain to do the push/pull of the waves.

http://www.mediafire.com/?xk98j204omnkusx

(sorry for mediafire Aids, but these are quick samples)

The last thing I was having fun with...was snares/claps + reveerb...where the reveerb is set to 100% wet 0% dry with high sus/dim. From there, EQ'd to get the correct pitch/grainyness in the noise...and then sidechained the everloving shit out of it with a kick to good effect. I don't have any examples, but I had some cool "white noise crashes" that resulted...

So anyway...yeah I was/am bored...lol

I'd be interested to hear any "home-made" FX samples from 'you people' that you're particularly proud of...I'd also be interested in any VST's/FX combos/Tricks that help with generating cool white noise FX. (Or FX of any sort)

- Cheers!

Cool, an actual creative synthesis thread, rather than an emulation-fest.

My favorite white noise sound ever is probably a synthesized cymbal sound in Supercollider. It uses a hundred very resonant filters at randomized frequencies to generate a moving, fairly realistic cymbal sound. Don't have a render of it, but instructions and details are here:

That firecracker sounds great, though I dont think you can use it in too many songs

Personally I just use a white noise as a downlifter maybe have some phaser or reverb.

One vst which has 100s of AMAZING effects is the PSP nitro. Just lists and lists of all these weird things that you can use on white noise or even on the master.

Logged off the net to come up with a couple of white noise ideas:

http://jbj.raceriv.com/sounds/ta/droplets1A.wav
http://jbj.raceriv.com/sounds/ta/droplets2A.wav
http://jbj.raceriv.com/sounds/ta/spinspinspinA.wav

First and second one are made with noise through a highly resonant band pass filter, randomized cutoff. They're triggered by an envelope that is basically just randomly timed "spikes." Panned and sent through reverb for the cavernous quality. The second file increases the rate of the amp spikes progressively.

Third one is white noise playing sixteenth notes. Soon after the start a delay turns on, which is synced to track tempo but slightly off time to give it that loose quality. Filter over the white noise is low cutoff, medium resonance. The noise's amp envelope loosens up over time as the filter cutoff also rises.

Another thing you can do with noise is try to create formants, which are the frequency resonances of the human voice / breath. Basically, you use some extreme EQing to leave in only a few bands of frequencies, and if you hit the right bands it can make noise sound kind of like "breathing."

Here is a paltry attempt using noise generator and EQ in Audacity:

Obviously that's not right on, but you get the idea.

Try using a highly resonant double notch filter (there's one in massive) and using that on a noise waveform. Map the filter so that it keytracks and you've got a really cool pluck sound. Comb filters can do a similar thing I think.

I was bored to death yesterday so i built a quick track around this sample and than stretched the track (and the title ) by 600%:

RbD - The Fire That Burned it All (Part1) by rubric destruction

If the spacey white noise in that track is the firecracker sample slowed down and "loved," that's quite awesome.
