I know you'll say second hand, and whatnot, but I am completely ignorant, so wouldn't even know what brands, models etc
Well, do you want second hand? That's your best bet, if you're looking so save some $$$. You'll get better equipment, starting out. That's how I did it.
I can only really help you on Canon gear though, I have no experience with Nikon (and if you're buying DSLRs I would really only recommend either Canon or Nikon. Sony's stuff is good, but like all Sony stuff, it's over priced).
The lens is where you'll start forking over the cash.
What sort of photography are you looking at doing?

If you're not going second hand, Pentax k-x (or better if you have the cash) is the way. It comes with pretty much best KIT lens on the market, it is filled with nice features and you are not paying for the name(Nikon, Canon, Oly, etc..).
Another nice thing about it is that it's compatible with stone-age lens. I picked up a 50mm prime for 400kn (around 70€), and they make razor sharp pictures.

On the photography subject, my canon 17-85mm lens died the other week. I have enough budget to replace it with the same model, or have a look at the tamron 17-50 f/2.8. Which one would you choose stu?

Yeah I don't mind second hand, for the reasons you mentioned it seems much smarter..
it'd mostly be up-close stuff, photos of people, crap like that, nothing too full on, or in need of super-quality (like your stuff) and most likely no OMGHORIZONSHOTSINCEI'VENEVERSEENTHESKYBEFORELETMEPHOTOGRAPHIT...
I know more people with canons and would be happy going that way
what'd be a rough cost for body and crappy lens (is there like a standard entry level lens, or are there hundreds of different lenses?)?
@vernon will have a look at those too, cheers
