Growing up, with regard to TV, video games, and eventually computers, my parents forced me to go outside every day, weather permitting. I'd complain at first, but after being out there for a few minutes I'd be having fun and wouldn't come inside for hours.
Of course, being 26 now, we didn't have a computer in the house until I was 12 (aside from my Dad's crappy work laptops), and I didn't get a cell phone until I was 16 and it was a Nokia in the pre-texting days, so it wasn't really a distraction.
I can't even begin to think of what it's like being a high school teacher right now.
