I thought I was hot shit when I was in like third grade, writing programs which would "predict" who would win a sports game.

Haha, I think my first C program was a fahrenheit to celsius converter.

I used to program stuff on calculators quite a bit, and even made a pretty enormous text-based roleplaying game for the TI83 which could handle expansion packs for additional worlds, monsters, and inventory items. I think it was called 'Runewars' LOL (or runequest or something equally inane). That's what I would do in math class after I finished my homework in the first half of the period.

I also used to program shockwave games back when that was huge.


I grew up on macs. My dad is a graphic designer and in those days it was the only kind of computer used in the printing industry, so we always got his hand-me-down hardware and software. First computer was an apple ii, then we got the macintosh lc (16 MHZ processor :haha. Then we upgraded to the iici, then it seemed like a quantum leap to the performa 6200 (75 MHZ). Then I think we had a bunch of those 3rd party mac clones, I remember some made by a company called 'Power Computing'. At some point my school system decided to throw away all of their mac computers and switched to PC, and my family decided to get us a PC in order to be able to work on school projects, etc at home and preserve compatibility. So they bought us Dells for a while, and I used those things until two years ago actually, when I bought a new iMac... much happier to be back on mac.

Yeah, my first BASIC experience was on TI-83 calculators.

That's the first program in K&R.

I remember dad bringing home a 386 and I couldn't install some game off 3 floppies because there wasn't enough memory.

You know what I was able to do though? Go outside most of the time and be a normal child, instead of developing a hunchback at 9 and demanding a mobile phone and fucking iPad at 13. I'm getting old.

In high school i used to distribute a piece of software that calculated "relationship compatibility" of two people based on some calculation those silly high school girls made up using names and dates of birth, current date and silly things like that. But instead of actualy bothering to code in all the calculations i just made it display a random % (in the 60 to 90 range). The only exception that i did bother to code in was my name and the name of one girl i liked, it always showed 90+ compatability...





It paid off

Growing up, with regard to TV, video games, and eventually computers, my parents forced me to go outside every day, weather permitting. I'd complain at first, but after being out there for a few minutes I'd be having fun and wouldn't come inside for hours.

Of course, being 26 now, we didn't have a computer in the house until I was 12 (aside from my Dad's crappy work laptops), and I didn't get a cell phone until I was 16 and it was a Nokia in the pre-texting days, so it wasn't really a distraction.

I can't even begin to think of what it's like being a high school teacher right now.
