as far as people wanting to change races, it's more that they don't feel the need to do so, because racial markers are increasingly less important and obvious, and gender markers are still as important, oppositional, and obvious as always.

That is to say that race is less of an issue (though still very much one) - people are more color-blind than gender-blind, and gender is generally the first thing people perceive when relating to another person.

So if you were a man born very impoverished, and you wanted to become very successful, would it be "manning up" to just accept your lot in life and stay poor?

In any event, they're both socially constructed nonsense, which is all that really needs to be said about either of them. Sex, on the other hand, is quite different because all you have to do is look at the chromosomes and (with rare exceptions) you have a straightforward, bright-line, binary distinction.
