I've gotten better at bring things back. These companies use that whole "life time" selling point knowing most never take advantage of it. Has to be a big purchase for me to keep the receipt. I've learned the value of stores with good customer service and return/warranty policy. A good company will realize that taking care of a customer problem is the investment of future sales. You can always mail it back to manufacturer as last resort if you want to follow through on principle.

I worked at a walmart in college and an old lady returned a turkey. We didn't sell turkeys but we still took it back. Probably not the best roi on that return since she had clearly lost her mind,.

I phoned CS at Myers. The lady that I spoke to was pretty shocked that a Global knife had even broken, let alone that I wanted to bring it back. She took all my details, and the details of the knife, so when I bring it in they'll have a brand spanking new one waiting for me! They also offered me 50% off any other Global knives I want to buy while I'm there!

When I was @ Best Buy, we had to call the cops because some lady did lose her mind after she wasn't allowed to return her cracked digital picture frame. I should also add that this particular brand was only sold at Radio Shack. She threw the [wrong] box at one of the managers and started screaming, before stomping over to the lines of shopping carts and attempting to kick them over.
