Is it too weird to write "Cover Letter" in the header of a cover letter? I didn't even know these things existed until today

You mean like a cover letter for your resume? It probably shouldn't say cover letter anywhere on it lol.

Yes, that. They're something completely alien to me as they don't exist in Brazil, so I'm very confused about what it's supposed to achieve. From what I've gathered (I'm reading some samples), I need to tell them why my resume is awesome before they read it. Is that it?
If that's the case, I totally want to attach Tiesto's remix of Adagio for Strings to the Word Document

Yeah, it's basically an opportunity to talk up both the company you're applying to and yourself. Show that you know a little bit about what you're applying for, and how your specific skill-sets would meet the needs of whatever position you're applying for.
There's tons of standard templates and things like that online for them, but cover letters are essentially just to show that you're actually knowledgeable about the position you're applying for, and that you're qualified enough, and literate enough for them to even bother looking at your resume.
An acceptable example of a cover letter would be this:

Hey, Will, I want to make my own pet tornado. Can you help me out? I've got two fans, an empty room, an electric shower head and, possibly, a cat.

well tell you what you gotta do.
turn your shower on, and close the bathroom door. get it hot and steamy. then close your A/C vent in there too (if you even have that in brazil).
anyway, next turn your A/C on full blast and cool your house down to like 60 degrees. get it nice and chilly, but more importantly dry as well. get a dehumidifier if possible. (again, idon't know if you have those in brazil).
next, put one fan in front of the bathroom door, and another one 90 degrees to it in the hallway. next, let the cat walk down the hallway.
when it gets close to the fans, turn them on full blast and open up the bathroom door.
hillarity will ensure.

Brasilia is itself a very dry city, but I'm sure I can buy a couple of those to make sure it's extra-dry.
