Been watching a lot of oldies lately. They seem more like simple stories to enjoy rather than movies you get sucked into. Nice change of pace. Highlights:

Casablanca
Yojimbo
Citizen Kane

So pretty much any "greatest films of all time" list is dependable for the most part, except stuff by Alfred Hitchcock. I seriously don't get the hype about his movies.

have you watched 'Vertigo'? That movie is just fuckin' ace. 'Vertigo' was well ahead of it's time.

+1 on your selection there. Check out the third man by Orson Wells as well.

As for Hitchock, have to say you're missing out. North by northwest is truly brilliant filmaking.

Casablanca was ace. I liked it even more because I adore the PC game Grim Fandango, and those two have several parallels.

I really recommend 12 Angry Men, that film is pure class.

I still have to watch Citizen Kane and Gone With The Wind.

I really liked The Road too. Viggo is the man. I think they intentionally left the cause of the apocalypse out to leave it up to the viewer to think about. My thing was, if if they're going to focus twice on characters that have had their thumbs removed, they need to give a bit of an explanation.

So I just watched The Sword of Doom & my mind is fucking blown. It features the same stars as Yojimbo (Tatsuya Nakadai & Toshiro Mifune) but swaps the roles, without actually swapping the roles at all. The film follows the villain (Nakadai, he's the bad guy in Yojimbo as well), & it is bat shit insane.

It's more than just a samurai gore flick, it's seriously fucked. The ending is such a goddamned twist you don't even realize it's a twist until the credits are rolling & you have time to comprehend what the fuck just happened.

This frame is all you need to know about the movie:

I went to IMDB for reviews & analysis & this sums up the movie quite well without spoiling much, as most reviews do:

quote:
Imagine your favorite action movie, then take out all the cheesy one-liners ("Asta la vista, baby!"), the irritating sidekick, the love interest, the techno-porn, and the off-handed moralistic ending. Then add a Commando-league body count, incredible swordplay, and great photography, and you've got Sword of Doom. This is a wrenching, visceral drama about an antagonist armed not with a stolen nuclear device, but with the best sword-fighting skills in Japan and a psychopath's indifference to human life. Unlike other more recent movies that try to portray the same raw, killing-machine kind of character, Sword of Doom does not resort to grimy photography or an adolescent delight in visual assault. Instead you get pure, distilled, ultra-kinetic fighting suffused with a thrilling coldness.

I'm interested in using it to find more British movies, as they seem to be great at capturing that bleak feeling I get from winter (Red Road, Dead Man's Shoes, London to Brixton, etc).

Check this shit out then....gritty as hell and apparently getting serious critical acclaim.
