This is what happens when you have to pay devellopers' salaries for 13 years without ever getting a return on your investment. There's really nothing surprising about this news.

the surprising part is it took this long! its a shame really, i was looking forward to discovering just how shit the game would turn out to be. Any game in development this long is bound to be atrocious. See daikatana

Seeing as how I'm a huge Duke Nukem fan, I would have loved to see this project comes into fruition, even if it would have been a pile of shit.

Still, there IS hope left, as Take-Two still owns the rights to the trademark...DUKE NUKEM FOREVER SHALL CONTINUE.

DNF is PC gaming's last hurrah. And I don't mean it in that PC gaming will die financially. No, PC Gaming will flourish and expand and continue to be as dominant as ever, but not in integrity. From now on, I fear every child gamer who never had the experience of the Duke, will only take a game with regenerative health and awkwardly implemented multiplayer components as "acceptable." They outnumber us, it's just a part of the exponential equation to human growth. I knew that PC gaming would die one day, I just did not know it would come without a DNF.

goodbye true PC gaming. You will be missed. And now, to wait for HL2 Episode 3's first cel-shaded emo/anime inspired screenshot.

oh really?

check it out.

The plan was actually pretty simple… create the longest developed game in history that eventually is one of the greatest games ever made. You have the time to work on it properly (no shit), so given the intelligence and talent of all the people involved, it was a pretty good bet. All 3DR had to do was make money on other stuff. All Epic had to do was open up a wide channel between the two companies. 3DR would serve as a research house for future Epic engine updates, but also give 3DR everything they did as well. The boots on the ground just had to keep the drum beating and keep the image of business as usual going. The truly hard to swallow part of this was some of us had to eventually leave, but we were guaranteed we’d be ok. All we had to do was let go of the idea of just making DNF in the traditional way… which I’m ashamed to admit was easier to let go of than I thought it would be.

In fact, with my role in this, I wouldn’t ever really work on the “real” DNF. That was a tough pill to swallow, but again the big picture looked good.

We have Halo 2 to thank for this trend. And from the looks of things, like you said, it has no sign of stopping.

i do agree that is is pretty lame, i doubt a 7 year old today would have the patience or tenacity to get anywhere in one of the original mega man games!

but at the same time, regenerative health does lend itself to enjoying a game and not worrying constantly about health percentage, finding the next med kit and constant saving vs loading.

i HATE it when i find myself saving, loading, savingloading, just to make progress in a game with a story i am supposed to be involved in|

(but i just suck at games then i guess)
