House Music and The Blues
House Music, particularly Deep House – thrives on the Minor 9 chord. That is, Root, Flat-Third, Fifth and Ninth (which is actually the Second but an octave higher).
The Blues is based around the Minor Pentatonic scale (Root, Flat Third, Fourth, Fifth and Flat- Seventh) with the Blues Scale adding the Flat Fifth for extra Blueness.
So how do these scales combine in a Blue House Track?
The track is called Deep Blue, the structure is Deep House but apart from the Minor 9 Rhodes Piano riff, the rest is pure Blues.
We have a live Guitar and Bass (Fender Custom Shop Jeff Beck Stratocaster and Fender Standard Precision Bass).
The Strat plays a number of typical Blues Licks, especially the sort that you'll find in the the Slow Blues.
Then we have a Rhodes MK1 playing some typical licks that you would normally expect the guitar to play.
Both the Guitar and Bass are played by me – the rest is programmed.
So, does it work?
You tell me – should I make more?
