Still if you're ever in Melbourne, let me know. We can go out, talk politics for about 15 minutes, then you can watch me drink myself into a quivering mess before passing out in a gutter somewhere. Isn't that, afterall, the very essense of all good political discussion?
Well put me on your calendar for 2007. I do have to dive the great barrier reef before your crown of thorns starfish kills it all .
My friend went to australia last year for diving and immediately applied for a visa after he came back. I don't know what you Aussies did to him, but I'll be watching out for your trickery ...

No, I'm not ashamed of what I do when I'm drunk, but there are things that I have done while drunk that I'm ashamed of. The last time was about a year ago, second to last about five years ago, and the third most recent one about eight years ago (yeah, I'm old). In addition there's all the stuff I would love to not have done/said (e.g. debating who should pay for a cab ride for half an hour), but don't really feel ashamed of. However, considering the amount of people who still ask me to drink with them, I think that I have positive qualities as a drunk as well.

Ok, I didn't get this. At all.

Normally I keep my online life seperate from RL, but I wouldn't mind meeting polit TAs and a few COR folk cuz you all are decidedly non-toolish .
Well, I'm close to Washington DC, and have been thinking of going there to see the essentials (the white buildings and the penis), but don't really know if there's much else, apart from drinking a beer with you and avoid getting killed by muggers, that warrants the cost and investment of time involved with going there?

None of my friends are political in the sense that I am, so I use these forums as a means to satisfy my argumentative needs. Since none of my RL friends have such desires to talk shop I guess I'm a slightly different person online than off.

I've met most of the Melbourne TAs and they're rarely what you imagine them to be. I don't mean that in a good or bad way, it's just that you kinda get a mental image of what people must be like based on what they post and it's rarely accurate. I don't think personalities carry over very well into the cyber-world, tbh.
I recognize that ones online alter ego must necessarily be percieved differently than the RL one, as the web-board communication channel is so incredible different from the RL one. First of all, online you're cut off from using your body and voice to your advantage. Second, you don't have the option of interrupting others, but are forced to hear them out. So yes, you have little control of the mental images that form in the minds of others.
However, I think that the discussions in the PDD-forum are so personal and, dare I say, deep that you get a much more accurate picture of the person at the other end, than is the case in the local forums. Further, the PFRs tend to be older than the other TAs, I think, and that should mean that there's little bragging and artificial bolstering of one's virtues here. Of course, as I've never met a PFR this discussion is purely acedemic and not in the least emperical.

Will do. If that's not worth the 4000 Euros the trip costs, then I don't know what is.

Hehe, MTG was great, but I haven't played it in a while now...
Were you a T1 or T2 player? In case of T1, do you have some of the rare rares (like the P9)? In case of T2, during what block(s) did you play?
Personally, I only play on a casual basis with my friends, as my experience is that people at tournaments either are assholes, or involuntarily make me feel sad.

My only EDM-friend went to Australia as well, and he is in the process of applying for a permanent visa too. The other friends I have that have been there are quite excited about the country too. All of them talking about the "friendly Australians".

Well the Great Barrier Reef is a fair way from Melbourne (as in, 1000+ miles away) but you're welcome to try diving in our marvellous Port Phillip Bay if you ever make it this far south. It's more or less the same as the GBR except for the lack of coral (well, pretty much any wildlife at all actually) and the preponderance of this poisonous, black stuff. But hey, if you like looking at disgusting, sludgy sand, we got plenty of that!

In this thread, maybe (which was a good idea, btw), but I think it'd be hard to accurately gauge someone's personality based on their political beliefs.

I'm not so sure about that. I'm 22, and I'm willing to guess that that would be around the median age for posters here (however, like you, I'm making that assumption without any empirical evidence at all), which couldn't be too far from the median age in other parts of the forum. Although, we have got guys like Shakka and Mr. Opus pushing up the average a bit, so who knows...

So long as you don't come to the country fleeing a despotic regime on a rickety boat (how's that for satire!) we tend to be pretty fond of foreigners. Presuming you don't mind talking about sport, and agreeing that Australia is superior to your country in whatever sport your country plays, I'm sure you'll find us to be pretty accommodating as a whole...
I have two referrals. One was someone I knew IRL, and he posted once or twice and then never again, and I believe the other one was someone I had met when I was in DC to see PVD @ FUR last September. When I still talked to/was still friends with a lot of TAs, I always preferred to keep the groups of friends seperate. Mainly because most of the friend I had had IRL simply weren't into EDM, and most of the TAs I knew were heavy drug users, and my friends, were not. It would just be an uncomfortable situation. It's pointless for them to sign up on TA if they don't even like EDM. They used to refer to TAs as "those techno people you hang out with". I don't hang out with TAs anymore, really. And I don't really have the time to keep up with EDM in all actuality. I try to keep in touch with SOME TAs, but those are a very limited few. Like, Occrider (When are you coming to visit me?!).

I wouldn't say that you can gauge someone's personality, but rather that you can get some hints. Or to put it in another way, I think "I'm an atheist and consider agnostics confused individuals" as more indicative of how I might get along with someone than "lol" or "u r so hot".

I tried to find some thread in the COR about how old people are (these was popping up ever so often back in the days I visited there), but the four letter restriction on search terms thwarted my efforts. I just seem to remember that a lot of teenagers were posting in these threads back in the days. But maybe they have grown up with no influx of new teenagers to take their place. You're a COR poster, so you tell me, Junior

Saw the first goal...then got in the pub just as Milan scored the second, our mate got there just before Milan scored third (poor boy, had Liverpool shirt on an all, thought it was still 2-0 til I pointed it out!) Thought bugger, dont like Italians (there is no country, despite what I might say bout the French (!), that I dislike apart from Italy and Italians) this is gonna be an embarrasment - but Liverpool scored two quich goals and I knew they would do it after that! This is one of the greatest nights in English football since man Utd beat Bayern Munich (went as mental then as I went tonight!) and england beat the Turks (bastards) and the Argies (more bastards)!
England fans are the best in the world! can you imagine three quarters of the ground packed by Liverpool fans?! Done us proud! Nearly as good (but not better!) than when we played Portugal (the hosts!!!!!!!!!!!) in Euro 2004 when England fans again filled up three quarters of the ground!
We have the best team in the world and if we dont win 2006 it will be an absolute travisty!!!
