I have been around very intellectual people every day for the past year, and many in highschool too, and will continue to be around for the next three years of my life. I see them in social situations and in the classroom. I have met many, many of these intellectuals out of the classroom and attempted to have a conversation with them, but they, not all, usually do not have very good social skills and things often get awkward. The are extremely bright, they like to drink like you and I, but I'll be damned if the vast majority of them has much social skills.

Yeah, it's an acquired skill. Seriously, though - just because you've been around some (pseudo) intellectuals who haven't learned proper social skills, that doesn't automatically mean that every intellectual is devoid of them altogether.

I had a few friends in high school who went on to Ivy League scools, who were always the life of the party. I also had a sibling that graduated from Hopkins whose frat buddies spent more time drinking and picking up girls than they did studying. A few of them are either working on Wall St., in med school, or are out promoting their own startup companies and/or are on their way towards becoming luminaries in their respective fields. I'm talking about people who scored between 1500 and 1600 on their SAT's, had 3.8 or above GPA's, etc.

Speaking of drinking, on Monday I went to a 21+ bowling alley which has a pretty good special on bowling and drinks on Monday nights. Anyway I was spot on with my game when, after the 5th frame, some kid came out of nowhere trying to make a beeline for the bathroom. He made it to where I was standing (a quarter of the way there) when he simply gave up and just started puking on my shoes. His friend then grabbed him (he couldn’t stand on his own anymore) and he proceeded to puke all over his friend’s shoulder. Then for some reason, the drunk guy tried to take his pants off … not in the way you would to piss if you get my drift. Luckily his friend sees this and realizes that if those pants come off we’re all fucked. So he grabs a hold of the pants and holds on for dear life. Anyway he eventually just picked the guy up (by his pants) and carries the guy outside where he just passes out on the parking lot.

I wanted to be pissed (the fuker threw off my game), but the whole thing was simply too amusing.

Personally it seems to me that smart people usually have better social skills than stupid people, especially later in life. Maybe there's a difference early in life because smarter kids are more occupied with learning while other kids are with playing, but really, I don't think I've seen a diplomat who hasn't finished some university, let alone high school. Besides, this political chillout thread where the conversation is mostly between us smart people (no need to be too modest) is ways ahead of threads in the chillout room.

I just so happen to attend an Ivy League School. So, yes, I am speaking from experience, and not just some as you imply.

Drug Titto: I actually agree with you here, because as we get older the scoial groups we belong to change. Its in my opinion, as you get older people value achievement and status far more in their friends than do people in college, where the ability to get laid and humor play a larger role. Some intellectuals I see have more friends later in life than the highly sociable kids back in high school and college. Convversations on computers however are deceptive. What seems to me to be the problem with many intellectuals is that their mouth cannot keep up with their mind. However, those that can, its awfuly fun to be around them.
