I used to have a rule where I refused to meet people on the internet out of principle because I thought it was abnormal, asocial behaviour. I kept up the whole internet "friends" and then "real" friends angle. |
I used to think that way as well, although to be fair I think that was somewhat rooted in envy that I didn't live somewhere where there were other TAs. I still think that it is very important to have friends from other environments than TA, but it's great to meet someone with the same obsession with music and clubbing. In Denmark I had one (1!) friend who was really into electronica and clubbing, and three years ago he moved to the Netherlands (and now he's applying for a permanent visa to Australia ). So, for me at least, it's a relief to be able to converse with friends about how Adam Beyer turned minimal at the end of his set last night, without getting mistakenly sympathic nods from someone who thinks a Beyer is a kind of beer.

I think that mentality is inevitably going the way of the dodo however ... I think it would def be cool to meet up and get sloshed with some polit forum members. Not to talk politics of course, but it's generally more fun to get drunk with intelligent folk . |
Oh, think of all the pretty illusions that will be shattered at such a meet up. One could never think of you as the mad information minister again. Same thing with people posting pics of themselves - what's up with that. I used to imagine Renegade to be somewhat like this
and then he turns out to be looking like this

All the mystique has been destroyed
Seriously, it's really too bad that we're all scattered all over the world, as that makes meet-ups unlikely (but then again, that's probably why this forum is so interesting). However, I'm in NYC at least until the end of August, and if some great DJ is playing in DC, then I'll be going there - even if it is the murder capital of the US. Further, Trancer-X is from this area, and St. Andrew is coming this way in the summer time, so I guess that there's possibilities after all? EDIT: Forgot that Swedes cannot handle alcohol, so if St. Andrew gets here, you should do something else. Take him to the zoo or something. )

It's my experience that getting drunk with intelligent people can be quite terrible, if just one of them is eager to prove that he/she indeed is intelligent/more intelligent than someone/anyone else. It doesn't help if you are indifferent to other people's merits yourself (as a good liberal should be), you still have to suffer the interruptions and sermons of the arguing parties. In relation to my work at the university, I've walked out on quite a few parties because eristic (and loud) dialogue has erupted. Though maybe that's not such a big issue with people employed in more flexible environments, where excellence is recognized and can be rewarded more freely.
