Ways Australia can kill you, No. 46,725: Redbacks in your wetsuit
quote:
20.11.2006
By RODNEY STEVENS
AT 8.50am on November 10 Wendy Parmenter was going about her daily routine of checking her wetsuit before a class.
Then suddenly her worst fears were realised.
After putting her hand in the arm of her wetsuit and feeling a web, the Grafton swimming coach was bitten on the wrist by a redback spider.
"There was no evidence of a bite at first – no pain – nothing," she said.
She said she saw a small black spider in the web, which she identified as a redback.
"I put the spider down onto a retaining wall block and I could see the red stripe on its back," she said.
"I walked about six metres up the side of the pool, I had to grab the handrail and I said to one of my adult clients that I didn’t feel well."
Miss Parmenter then checked her wrist where the spider made contact with her skin.
"It was just like a bee sting ... there was a red dot and a little bit of pain."
What followed for Mrs Parmenter was a trip to Grafton Base Hospital where she received two doses of antivenom and days of pain.
"By the time we got to the corner before the hospital my tongue and throat were swollen," she said.
"Over the space of two and a half hours I had two lots of anti-venom, my blood pressure was low and I was administered oxygen to help my breathing."
Miss Parmenter said around two hours after the bite the pain set in.
"I had an intense radiating pain that felt like a burning electric shock shooting up my arm to my shoulders that lasted four days," she said.
"The pain wouldn’t allow you to go to sleep at all."
Discharged the same day, Miss Parmenter returned to Grafton hospital at 8pm Saturday where she spent the night after the swelling of her tongue and throat returned.
Doctors at the hospital told her it was rare to give a patient two doses of anti-venom and she must have got close to all of an adult spider’s venom from the bite.
After teaching swimming on and off for the past 27 years, Miss Parmenter said she would not wish this experience on anyone.
"I don’t know if there is statistics of fatalities from redback spider bites but I wouldn’t like to feel like this again," she said.
"I have always been extremely vigi- lant about checking for spiders and I will be warning all kids and parents who attend my classes from now on to check for spiders.
"Don’t be blase — check anything that you put on or near your body that is left outside."
Miss Parmenter said she had her property sprayed about two months ago for spiders and she has just resprayed after the recent rain so she can return to work.
"I have lots of classes to catch up on," she said. "Nobody pays my sick pay as I own my own business."
Miss Parmenter said the support from her clients has been wonderful through the ordeal.
"The cards and flowers I have got of kids and parents has been quite touch- ing."

So I just realized, I could spend 8 bucks on excellent motor oil and a filter and do it myself, or I could pay 28 bucks to get it done with out having any knowledge of what type of oil they used. Screw that, I'm doing it myself from today onwards. Now all I got to do is wait for the engine to cool down. I bought a ramp, drip pan, funnel and everything.

Holy shit!!! The filters screwed on so fucking tight! Haven't had any luck getting it off so far . Now I'm sitting at my place with a car whose oil I just drained, so I can't go anywhere to buy any tool that might help. I'm such a dumbass!

Luckily there was a Automotive parts store 2 blocks down, so I walked down there and bought an 'oil filter wrench.' Didn't even know those existed.
@ Laz: Thanks dude. I appriciate the gesture Senior FX, but I got in under control now.

Sounds like a bad way to go.
It keeps the riff-raff out of the country, or at least the slow ones that get in don't last very long and if something latches onto them its simply a case of running faster than the slowest ones.

See thats the problem with men. You go decide too do something like change oil or remove a sparkplug because youre either trying too prove something, save money or just like getting covered in crap.
Then you find out that you need too buy $80 of decent oil, $10 oil filter, $150 worth of sparkplugs and realise you dont have any tools so you run off and buy about $300 bucks worth of tools to actually do the job.
Then you'll swear, cry, cut yourself and with any luck remember too buy $30 wheel jacks so you dont kill yourself when the normal jack gives out.
Bash stuff a bit more, hurt yourself some more and realise theres things like sump plug gaskets which cost $1.00 but you didnt buy and have too catch the bus down too the store again, covering everything in oily crap and buy a set of overalls so you dont ruin your clothes for about another $80 too and go back home.
Or you can ignore the sump plug gasket and hope it doesnt leak too much... later seizing the engine and causing $1000's of dollars of damage.
This is assuming you know the difference between gearbox and diff oils and pour any old left over engine oil into those thinking youre very clever.
Then stumble back into the house and get a beating from any of the cohabitants in there because you've covered the place in crap and clog up the toilet with 5litres of used engine oil youre not sure what too do with now. Or just pour it over the corner of the neighbours fence and kill their plants.
I just put on my best clothes, take the car down too the service centre with a backseat full of oil, filters and stuff I want them too look at because otherwise they'll jip me on price. Pay them $100 and pick it up in the afternoon.
Then I'll catch the bus too the nearest mall and go shopping.
If I'm feeling particually cruel I'll go too another car lot and convince them too let me take their cars for a test drive. Yesterday I managed too convince some too let me drive a Lotus Exige with a factory supercharger.
Now all I need too do is find about $100,000 too buy one because its faster and prettier than my current car
