The meaning of Cheese, with regards to Trance today and before

Hey guys,

I was just wondering, while browsing through some old cds and records I listened to some of the most melodic tunes the trance era was once lifted by. PVD had his for an angel, another way, Gouryella - gouryella, system f - out of the blue, atb - til i come anyways you get my drift. Anyways these days trance has moved to a more darker deeper less melodic phase where anything resembling an anthemic melody is perhaps classified as brilliant "love simulator" and maybe soon played out, or just simply labelled cheese.

Maybe it is my nostalgia for the past days of trance, and yes i know like everything else things change, but why such a degrading term?

Thanks.

Cheese isn't a degrading term so long as that type of music knows it's silly.

Case in point: Happy Hardcore.

With the infantile sounds and chirpy melodies, it's music that really can't be taken too seriously but it can be enjoyed on a fun level ************. That's all cheese is: music that's light-hearted.

When cheese becomes a derogetory term is when it's used to describe light-hearted music that, for some bizarre reason, thinks it's actually being serious. Aside from the poppier forms of trance (DJ Sammy, et al.), a lot of trance with peppy melodies suffer from this self-delusion that it is legitimate contendors (like one of those "epic" war movies thinking it has a serious chance at an Oscar -of which there were many last year). Who do they think they're kidding, though? When we look back on it years from now, a large portion of vocal trance with sputtering supersaw builds will be enjoyed with irony much the same way a lot of italo and euro does to this day, when it is no longer being produced at such vast quantities and it realizes how it should have been presenting itself all along.

Until that time comes, however, it will be lambasted for as long as it thinks it's serious music.

i hate the term cheese with a passion. I think it's unfare to classify any form of music one way or another, there will always be SOMEONE out there intelligent or not that likes it. And GOOD! it creates a vast musical diversity that spawns new sounds and influences new people. If there hadent been that one crappy track 10 years ago that some great DJ liked, maybe they wouldn't have tried to create something similar. perhaps if the track was labled cheese, and denounced by their peers, they would have been less inclined to become a dj. Sorry i don't want to get into a is trance bad or not discussion again, that's just my opinion about the term cheese, and why i dont like it

IMO cheeze is a bad production made to be commercial (make $$)

something cheep, and produced quickly...

no good production should be called cheeze, even if it does get to the "outside world."

examples...toca me, stringer

their vocal mixes could be concidered cheeze since it wax a cheep ad on to make more $$

I wrote this in 2002. I don't nessecarily agree with it all nowadays, but it should give you an idea:

quote:
Cheese is not a genre, there can be "cheese" tracks in almost any genre. Cheese is the overal artistic value a track has when produced with one purpose in mind - to sell as many copies as possible. So it's full of cliches. The structure and drumrolls and bassline and melody type, commonly used sounds that go for immediate effect, no multiple possible interpretations, no multi-layered sounds.
These tracks all mostly have a mellow feel to them, and always appeal somewhat good on first hearings as they are engineered to do so. That's also why they work to some extent quite well in clubs and on raves, because they have a straight to the point attitude, everyone can feel the effects easily, it is bright transparent music and very expressionistic in it's nature. The message it contains is easily understood by everyone for which i believe it has a very important role as a stepstone to more sophisticated music.

Everyone has to admit, by ignoring the consiousness of the low-quality production, when they open themselves to this music and allow themselves to just experience it, the effects of cheese can be quite strong, especially when on E's. Luckily there's more to trance than cheesy trance, but trance would not be complete without cheesy trance IMO.

The strength of cheese lies in the fact that it's simple not complex. Tt's impressionistic and aimed at a very direct form of cummunication through music.

what about atb's new album? It doesn't sound like andre was solely trying to commercialize and make $$$. the drum rolls and melody although catchy doesnt seem cheap or single layered, it doesnt seem to have the same feeling as dj sammy heaven or what not. and still his music is classified as cheese.

It could just be his previous works lingering in the minds of folk.

They were good. Light hearted, peppy, cheesy even at times, but good for what they were.

It's a shame some folk thought ATB's work is something bigger than that but, hey, I once thought 2 Unlimited was more than what they actually were as well. We were all young once.
