Ah-ha! but that is the catch...
The iPod is the first (and as far as I know only) widely sold electronic device that uses a "polymer battery". Basically the entire case of the iPod is the battery. It is made of this plastic substance that works like any other recargable battery but can be molded into any shape you desire. It is how the iPod can be as small as it is and still have good battery life. The technology is fairly new and thus it is not easy to predict how logn exactly a cell will last.
Under heavy use, I have heard, first generation iPods fail within 12-16 months. Heavy use is basically running non stop almost all day long. Under light to moderate use (the amount that Apple designed the machie for) I have read nothing so far about first generation iPod batteries going kaput.
