It's not because they don't technically 'DJ' ...

... it's because you are voting on them based on production merit, not talent as a DJ.

It's about analagous to voting for Michael Jordan as a great baseball player. Yeah, he tried it and he sucked at it, but he sure drew a crowd and entertained the audience. And damn, was he a good basketball player!

Did i say i prejudge? I see all the producers i like dj at a club. If they make me dance and have a fun time they get my vote. Like i said above, i look to have fun at a club and if a producer drops a track i love of his, it helps out in the votes when poll time comes along. I enjoy myself seeing a producer dj over a great dj who doesnt produce because i like to see the one behind the track. It adds more to me.

If every producer i like sucks at a club when i see them dj, they wont get my vote. But artists such as above and beyond and armin get mine because i like the sets from song to song and love when they drop a production track here and there. So for example above and beyond and a dj who doesnt produce are tied. But when a song is dropped by above and beyond, i have more fun dancing and therefore it adds to me picking them in polls.

You haven't been to the right parties.

No doubt I love to see producers spin and check them out. But just because they had a few tracks does NOT put them up to par with Dj's who've been out here longer and playing to MUCH bigger crowds.

Lee B is not in the top ten because...... ?

He should atleast be 11

This argument is never going to end.

Basically, from this thread and other such threads over the years, 'up and coming' producers who DJ are automatically seen at a lower level than those who strictly 'DJ'. To the complainers, they look at the DJ's experience level, how they fit in within their genre, or simply the lingering memory of how pitiful that producer-turned-DJ's sets are/were when he/she started 'DJ'ing - all these affect their perception of that producer (or any producer) in a DJ role. Now, over time, if said producer comes out with less tracks and instead focuses more on DJing -- then maybe those criticisms will fade -- as long as their DJing career is succesful -- if it's not, ppl bitch and tell them to stick to producing. Just the same, if they can manage to produce great tracks AND rock the crowd during their sets then they'll also be accepted.

Enter a poll - a strict 'DJ' you've long respected (and admired) is suddenly bumped down a few levels -- then someone (a producer turned part-time DJ) who you interpret to be less skilled attains a ranking that you feel is undeserved. You get caught up in emotion and bitch about the accuracy of such polls and then get at the ready to bitch at anyone who dares disagree with your views.

Since the poll is simply a quantitative representation of opinion it is impossible to argue the merits of what a particular ranking indicates -- other than saying "more people voted for DJ X over DJ Y" - that's it, that's all!

See that argument i could agree with. I might not have been to the right parties. But any case, in general, when i see a producer tear a club up, it adds something to the vibe for me over someone who tears it up but doesnt drop a track of tehres here and there. That is all there is to it.

And to back up my voting on producers automatically. I just saw ATB for the first time. Never voted for him before based off of his tracks because i dont know what he is like at clubs. WHen i saw him i hated his set.

One sees a dj doing this and another sees a dj doing that. To each their own on what makes them feel a dj is better than another dj. I base mine on who makes me dance the hardest at a club

So it all boils down to the definition of what a good DJ is to you. Element-y feels the DJs who also produce the kind of music he likes are the best, even though they might suck at DJing.

Yes this is all whats wrong with the top dj polls, but talk about beating a dead horse here

Well suck at djing is seen in different ways. There is skill with the tables themselves like effects and fades and transitions, and then there is track selection. Track selection is my pick.
