Four years?
Excuse me if I missed something, but why not just settle for something else? A lower-level job while you search for that big break?
That's what I'm doing now, basically.
I actually got a BS job today just to put money in my pocket while I apply around the country for the position I would like to get.

One was contractual (3 months). The other was a BS job that I quit before going to Europe.
Now that I'm back I picked up another BS job (took me one day to find a job working at a restaurant), while I submit my resume and apply around the country.
Now that my girl and I are on the outs, the possibilities are endless. Thinking of getting an ESL teaching certificate, brushing up on my Polish, and maybe going back there to teach. My father is a prof at one of the universities there and said he could get me a gig if I did those two things.

Well I'll be honest. For the first year or so, I did get a little too comfortable with those UI checks. I underestimated the length of this recession and made some poor choices with that money. Hit up parties all around Nor-cal, took other people along for the ride with me that may not have been so deserving. Bought them food, drinks, party favors, did stupid stuff, that sort of thing. It wasn't until middle of 2010 that I realized, "Shit. I really need a job now." By then it seemed like it was too late. Even trying to get those "lower-level" jobs as you call them was still fucking difficult. I was now considered long-term unemployed and that hurt my chances even more. You gotta understand too that I was also competing for these lower level jobs against people who already had jobs, but needed to get a 2nd or 3rd one to stay afloat. I went to job fairs, I visited my unemployment office several times, signed up for a few temp agencies...nada. So eventually I decided to focus on my education instead and temporarily desist with filling out apps. I had already completed around 100 by the time I went back to school, no exaggeration. Put in another 40 through this year with my newly updated resume before finally getting something.
At least now, I've learned my fucking lesson. Gonna be more penny-wise with that money from the new job and not party so much. Time to grow up, slow down, act my age, so to speak. I've already cut off most of the useless freeloaders from my life and now have a better sense of who my real friends are.
