Well if its what you enjoy then its what you enjoy. Its mentally taxing, you are problem solving constantly, and it pays well. Programmers get to be creative as well. Yea the hours suck, but you can retire at 40 if you work it out long enough (though average turn over rate at a lot of places is 3-5 years before people leave for whatever reason).
The point I am trying to make though is that if you are doing it for work you a lot of the time do not get to work on what you want (the work is still enjoyable, its just not the same enjoyable as working on whatever you want) and that really takes it out of you. The last thing you want to do in your free time is go and continue to code because your normal 9-5 (or 7-6 more likely) just kills ya.
