I think that was just a glitch in my Wi-Fi.
To be fair, most of the response (critical and Regular Joe) has been pretty positive, so maybe you'll like it. And I don't like the director and I thought Arrival and Bladerunner 2049 were crap as well, so it was always going to be a hard sell.
In a nutshell, even though the thing is 150 minutes long and is only half of the book, they cut out basically everything that made Dune so rich, from the world building to the characters. Everything is rushed, nothing is explained properly, loads of important concepts are completely left out and none of the characters have any depth (and they were pretty thin even in the original book). Instead we are given two and a half hours of very impressive set design and slick cinematography. Lots of big visuals with absolutely no content to them.
And with the content that does survive, I disagree with so much about how it's presented. Denis Villeneuve is obsessed with grand, slightly sinister imagery that is supposed to be awe-inspiring and strange, but is completely detached from the human level of the story. Like, the Atreides are the good guys and Caladan is supposed to be a beautiful verdant world in opposition to the brutal conditions of Arrakis, right? So why in this film do the Atreides live in some dark, rainy gothic castle on top of a windswept mountain? I half expected them to have an undead butler. And these are supposed to be the heroes! Yeah, it probably looked fantastic in some concept artist's portfolio, but it's completely wrong for the story.
I always thought Dune the novel was a vividly realised universe but a bit of a cold read, with thinly sketched characters and a lack of emotion. I didn't have high hopes for an adaptation because Dune just has too much world building to do in movie form, but I thought a film version with good actors could at least bring some humanity to the character level of the story. Instead, the film has actually made me appreciate the characterisation in the book more, because there's so fucking little of it on screen.
