i don't think it's fair to blame the mezzanine night on markus' demand. first off he'd been kind of overexposed playing 4 times in that year stretch iirc, second he was competing against the newly crowned #1 pvd who plays the same prog trance sound and third mezzanine as a venue doesn't have the appeal 1015 or ruby does for that kind of crowd/music. i think these 3 factors combined played a huge role in people's decision that night.
another issue was i dunno about other people, but for me i hate it when mezz places the dj booth on that corner stage as opposed to the center stage. it's fine for live shows, but dj sets work much better on the center stage. that could have contributed to the lack of vibe and the thinning of the crowd. people DID show up that night, they just didn't stay
