The very few times I know I was dreaming, it was only because I woke up during it. Otherwise, I have no recollection of any dreams whatsoever. And I honestly can NEVER remember what they were about even just 2-3 hours after waking if I did have one. |
You have to make a conscious effort to remember your dreams. Everyone dreams. We go through 90 minutes cycles of sleep at night, progressing from light sleep to deeper sleep, then back to light sleep, and ending with REM sleep and dreaming. We typically waken out of REM sleep during a dream. Normal sleepers spend about 20% in deep sleep, 30% dreaming, and 50% in light sleep. The interesting thing about REM sleep is that the brain appears as though it is awake during this time, even though this is the deepest stage of sleep.
But yeah, that sleep cycle explains why people who actually remember their dreams say they have 3 or 4 a night.
