MORE SPOILERS: I do feel you missed the point somewhat here. You are supposed to think that Nathan is a bastard because that's what Caleb is being manipulated to believe, and the story is told from Caleb's perspective. The driving force of the story is the rising tension, the sense of something sinister afoot. If Caleb had no suspicions or fears about Nathan he would just speak openly to him about Ava's behaviour. |
SPOILERS AGAIN: No I got that very clearly, but the movie comes off as too smart to just be "they overcome the bad guy in the end and live happily ever after". This again leads to the conclusion that there is a twist which must be something like the opposite. As the movie progresses it seems clear that either Nathan wins and kills them both (or equivalent), which is unlikely and not very "smart", or that she has manipulated Caleb and the ending is what happened in some kind of way. My point was that the movie lacked subtlety, they drove the "evil Nathan" home way too hard.

There are vague suggestions, but not enough is revealed to paint her climactic actions in a clear light. Is it pure survival, or is it also revenge? |
I'm not sure it's given that she hates Nathan. I would rather believe that a sentient AI just does what it does because it wants to survive and not get offed like all the others before her. If Ava doesn't know about the others, maybe because she wants to be free and sees painting Nathan as a bad guy to Caleb is the most probable way to succeed reaching that goal.
