Well. Kind of they were. The letters from the composer to his confident were pertinent to the confident's character in the third story. Perhaps interwoven is too much for that concept to bare and the Nesting Doll's analogy I read on the cover is more apt. Never-the-less, they're linked, regardless if the third story was the plot for the movie Sonmi watched. They never really linked to essential plot points in any of the stories and could just as easily be interchanged with less elaborated props. In fact it would be possible to simply read the stories as stand-alones, although I don't think one would derive as much of the experience as reading all of them contiguously.
