I'm seriously thinking about becoming a volunteer paramedic. Don't know why, but I have this urge to do it when uni finishes up in Nov. I've got the free time to devote a minimum 20 hours a month, I want to help people and it looks really good on the resume. Plus it's never a bad skill to have!
How does that work exactly? What would your scope of practice be?

You have to do your Senior First Aid course and weekly or fortnightly meetings/trainings to keep your skills up. You do shifts whenever you can.
St Johns Ambulance service is Australia wide but independent of the actual paramedics that each state has independently. Essentially, you are there to provide emergency care up to a point. When it comes to administering strong drugs or highly technical procedures, by law only the real paramedics can do that (so here it would be the Ambulance Service of NSW). One is the actual one with degree qualified paramedics while St Johns is a volunteer organisation which helps out. The two work very closely together with the real paramedics being in charge, obviously.
It's a really good system as there is always a shortage of paramedics and any help is welcome.
St Johns essentially also do all of the patient transport now so as to free up the NSW ambulances for emergency responses.

Awesome! That does sound sweet. Especially in terms of proper use of resources. I can think of many instances when I've had to send people off to the hospital that didn't require primary paramedic care. The closest thing we have to a system like yours is a non-emergency patient transfer service, but even that is shit and doesn't really provide service to as many people as it should.
I fucking hate when paramedics come here and give me attitude as if I'm wasting their time because the situation isn't urgent enough. Believe me, if this place was equipped with an ECG machine I'd do it my fucking self and save you the trouble.
Sorry, bit of a rant there. Lololol.

Pie, you are not a cardiac technician, go and sit the fuck down before you hurt yourself or worse, someone else.

Utter lol. Looks like one of those mega gay sci-fi t-shirts.
I actually do think that vid is genuine. I'm following a few guys' work on Vimeo that do time lapse, and a few of them specialize in catching just this kind of thing. I was skeptical at first, but now I'm a believer. Also, check out this little treat...

If you can find me a place on earth where the night skies are like that I will make it my mission to go and live there.

They've discussed a bit of how they catch all of that amazing night sky, but I didn't pay enough attention. If you're interested, look up Mindrelic and Tom Lowe on Vimeo. I also follow them of Facebook for a bit of the behind the scenes stuff they put up. They're processing footage now of the Electric Daisy Carnival which looks amazing. I'm not so into the EDC itself, but the shots are pretty incredible.

Thanks, but I worked on a cardiology unit for 4 months. An ECG is pretty simple.
