Vinyl Junkies: SHIFT promo set = wicked twisted dark tunes
I'm gonna level with you.
When Vinyl Junkies were first introduced to me as a sound approximately a year and a half ago, they were "good" DJs. They knew how to ramp the crowd, play the hits, and get the peeps dancing. What more could we ask from the dynamic duo?
Then, Eric Entrena was playing at the zone....masses of tribal lovers flock to the club to hear their favourite DJ. As eric winds down his set, Vince and Val step up to the DJ booth to get ready to release some serious tunage. I myself, exhausted from Eric's set, was ready for a "good" set from the vinyl junkies to wind down the afternoon. What I expected, and what happened were completely different things.
Vinyl Junkie's unleashed some dark, sic, twisted bassy tunes that creeped me out and hyped me up all at once. Riveting rolling underlying bass lines that urged the listener on, with creepy sounds and vocals that put pleasant chills up the spine--this was a new Vinyl Junkies to me--one I had never heard before, and they had totally won me over.
It seemed to me that they kept this 'style' to their zone sets. I was forever bugging Val and Vince to give me a recorded set from zone--i wanted something that dark and twisted pounding out in my car stereo! But, in typical form of most sets that occurr at CZ, no recorded set was forthcoming; it was something exclusive to zone... you "had to be there" to experience it.
Fair enough.
However, now comes along their new promo CD that has taken a completely different vibe than their previous "Sleeze" release.
Shift, initially out on CD only, is now available on the web (go to www.clubculture.com and download the zip, bottom right hand corner of the main page).
I can tell you that this CD captures the very feeling I get from a true Vinyl Junkie's set pounded out from the heart of comfort zone during a dark and tormentuous Sunday session. The entire set tells a story, from the lower BPM songs at the beginning to the solid build ups and creepy vocals of song 7 (anyone who knows me has certainly heard me talking about track 7... approximately 47 mins into the mix).
Is that a hint of Claude Von Stroke's Who's afraid of detroit on track 3/4? Echo'd rather melancholically in the background...
This type of tunage totally turns my toupee topside (alliteration sentence of the day!).
Great job guys...! This has turned out to be among my favourite promo CDs.
Warning: a little dark to be listening to before doing anything requiring extreme optimism though.. i had it on in the car just before doing a dive, and realized it was a little dark to be playing before plunging into cold, dark waters. Appropriate, perhaps, but a little dark.
