If you read the Greg Proops link I provided you can see that he actually studied improvisation. Most of them have been doing it for years.
And each time, someone thinks they're faking it — the improvisation, that is.
“One of the first questions we get is, ‘Come on, really?'” Mochrie says, laughing. It's a weekday, so Mochrie's in Toronto (“The Los Angeles of Canada,” as he calls it) since he and Sherwood tour on weekends. “Part of it is frustrating, because it's our only skill, so please, give us credit for it! Even people who come to see our stage show, where every suggestion comes from the audience — about 80 percent of the games we have audience members onstage with us — people still think, ‘Oh, they planned it.' Not realizing the incredible financial undertaking it would be to pay half the audience to be our spies.”
