So where are you at these days, mate? Home yet, or still overseas? |
I'm here for good, at least until my visa runs out and the gestapo come knocking.

So I had my second dream ever about tranceaddict.
I was in this large, old fashioned classroom with about 60-80 people jammed into it. Lira was the teacher, and all the seated people were TA users. Some of the faces were familiar, but there were just as many strangers (the lurkers and other people who've never posted pictures).
Lira approached some dude at random and said "who would you most like to be revealed?" in his Brazilian accent. The guy said: "Domesticated". Lira then asked me to stand up, which I did, immediately. However, all these other guys started standing up at the same time, saying "I am Domesticated" and "No, I am!" in a Spartacus manner. I was pretty amused when I woke up and remembered it. |
That's great!
By the way, have you ever say anything in English before? I probably don't sound like you think I do
Sure, you can tell English is not my native language, but I'm not sure "Brazilian" is the best adjective to describe whatever it is that cheesy English sitcoms made to my accent. I probably sound like a toothless chav trying to be Mexican

Well, you know I worry about you
Berlin is one of the cities I really wish I'd visited when I was in EU. |
Well, the greedy part is, I wish I'd moved here the second I finished high school. The whole reason it's awesome is because the fall of the wall created all these derelict spaces, allowing both cheap rent and heaps of illegal parties. Plus, after being oppressed for so long, people were happy to let each other do as they pleased. There was an incredible spirit here. All that still remains, but it's being diminished day by day due to property development, people becoming more uptight, and douchebag expats like myself moving in.
I can't see it becoming a boring city within the next decade, but if it does I think Budapest would be my next choice. They have a similar situation: slack law enforcement, former communist past and lots of empty space (due to the Holocaust). The problem there is learning that awful language though. Lira, tell us how difficult Hungarian is compared to the Germanic and Romantic languages.

Just got this text message from a friend:
Jesus turned water into wine.
I just put a stick in a non-stick pan.
Your move Jesus.

Fixed (I reckon you can say "Romantic languages", but this term isn't really used in order to avoid confusion with the Romantic movement, probably).
You see, English is a Germanic language with loads of words borrowed from Latin/French, so both families sound quite - for the lack of a better word - "familiar" to English speakers. Hungarian, however, unlike Russian or Hindi which are distant cousins of English, doesn't even belong to the Indo-European languages. Along with Finnish, Estonian and Basque, Hungarian is a language that shares no common ancestor with the other European languages as far as we know.
On the one hand, Hungarian is probably a tricky language for us because we need to learn everything from scratch: most words won't sound like anything we know, it's got nearly 20 cases and more vowels than you probably imagine. However, it's not as hard as most people take it to be: the cases (and pretty much all prefixes and suffixes in the language) are quite regular, there's a "vowel harmony" so it's easy to get a hang of how the vowels work after a while... and, if 13 million people can speak it, so can you
(I wonder if that's really worth the trouble, however)

Believe it or not, I actually knew all that. Finno Ugric and all that.
<--- Twice in one day. Yeah, I just went there.
I think I may have learnt it from you a couple of years ago though. Hungarians have very strange accents, they sound like Asians crossed with... something else.
