See, I consider Sci-Fi very different from fantasy. Sci-Fi is more about the present, the future of the real world, and the consequences of actions we take today and could take in the future. I'd consider Star Wars more like Fantasy because it's more about the plot and characters than things like the themes in BNW or 1984. I could write about the definition of Sci-Fi and the differences between it and Fantasy all day [Though obviously it's all personal opinion as there is no set definition ]
I was a big fan of the song of Ice and Fire series. I really hope he actually finishes the series and doesn't keep it going on forever and then dying on us. I read a few of the Robert Jordan books (own the first 9), but halfway through the ninth my bookmark fell out and I just put down the book and haven't read anymore. Huge, huge, huge fan of Terry Pratchett as well.
Going to read 1984 next, after I finish this Zahn novel. Then might look into Ubik, by Dick, re-read what's been published so far of Ice & Fire, or ask for suggestions from the COR |
this is a way better definition than mine, good point about star wars type sci fi being able to fit in with fantasy, makes a lot more sense than me just saying they're the same with different names, since they're pretty much exactly the same and can have the same name, you're right..
PKC- fuck those purists, nothing scientific in there
yeah song of ice and fire, i think i read the first 3, then he took like 5 years to bring out the next one and i got over it, and cbf reading all of them again just to get upto date (even though they're awesome!)... haha i think i made it to number 7 in wheel of time, again my brother was nuts on it, but i only really enjoyed the first book... everything after that was a bit of a chore, or a personal challenge... (i managed to finish Ulysses by joyce, so can get over never finishing robert jordan's diarhetic writing style )
also a HUGE fan of pratchett!! How fucking sad was it that he got diagnosed with Alzheimers last year brilliant man, really tragic
I don't do much reading for the last few years, other stuff to keep me occupied, managed to slam a few in the end of last year holidays though, back catalogue of hunter s. thompson, fahrenheit 451, and brave new world again, cormac mccarthy's the road and a few other short classics i think... old man and the sea was one...
edit: ever read any douglass adams? guy who wrote hitchhikers guide to the galaxy... if you like terry pratchett he'll blow your mind, dude was a genius
