Not really. They come from very distinct traditions: The Chemical Brothers are much more "rock music" oriented, being influenced by the Madchester movement - it's no coincidence that Gallagher guy is in so many tracks. There are also guitar riffs and bass slapping all over their first albums. The Crystal Method came out of the "Acid Breaks" fever that took over the American West Coast in the early 90's - Überzone sounds a lot more like the Crystal Method than the Chemical Brothers, as it's much more "dancefloor" oriented... if you add a 4/4 beat on top of Comin' Back, it becomes just another trance track. Their later work perhaps converged as big beat became a more coherent movement... but their early stuff sounds nothing alike. |
They both hail from a breakbeat tradition, the hip-hop family tree, with influences from acid house. Yeah, the Chems are influenced by UK indie music, but they didn't start out playing in guitar bands and they don't compose songs like a band. We're talking about their early material, pre-Crystal Method here. Their work is heavily sample-based, loop-oriented, built from the bottom up. They named themselves the Dust Brother, fer'chrissake. Using a guitar instead of a synth does not mean you can say they sound nothing alike.
And as for the Chemical Brothers not being very dancefloor oriented... I don't even know where to begin there.

Maybe I exaggerated when I said they sound nothing alike, but saying the Crystal Method ripped the Chemical Brothers off is not any less exaggerated.
