I have always felt that art is, foremost, communication - it can often be a form of therapy and self-stimulation in this sense, but there is an elevated purpose as to why some people seek it out far more than others. If you feel this call, I see no reason why you should not pursue it feverishly. I know this is easier said than done, and perhaps you are past the point of even caring (or is apathy just a defense mechanism? I know it is for me all too often if we're to be frank about things), but there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to create things that others can relate to or listen or see or interact with - it's possibly the most lofty and pertinent beckon that the creative process endows us with.
Change often hurts because it usually entails the destruction of what we once were, but perhaps that is the way of all worthwhile things in our brief, little lives.
In the case of music, would you say that you listen more than you write, or the other way around?
