I can't wait to see it on the IMAX screen. I saw it yesterday and I was duly impressed.

Well I must be living on a different planet to everyone else, because I thought it was almost as bad as Prometheus.

Well that apparently also puts you on the same planet as people who think Prometheus was some kind of a dreadful affair, so maybe you just have a different understanding of what counts as depth and good storytelling when it comes to modern sci-if. They can't all be RoboCop, after all.

As for me I'll be seeing it in IMAX tomorrow (along with the extra twenty six percent of image the formatting apparently allows).

It wasn't nearly as egregiously stupid as Prometheus on a plot level (although I have some major bones to pick with the central plot device) but it made me almost as angry. I seriously wanted to get up and leave in a couple of places. I was cringing in my seat.

I could write reams, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. More than anything, I didn't think it was a Blade Runner film. Tone, style, genre, moral compass, music, everything. It's a dystopian action film with some nice visuals.

its tone/ambience/aesthetic was the only thing i really liked about it (not as a blade runner film necessarily, as i havent seen it since i was a teenager and quite obviously didn't get it). i might have to go re-watch the original. which version would you recommend?

There's barely any difference between the Director's and Final cuts, so either of those is fine.

An absolutely beautiful film, which makes it even more of a shame that I found it so disagreeable overall. As a generic dystopian film it is not terrible, but the main plot puzzle/catalyst makes no sense and had no emotive power for me (partly because it made no sense). And as the sequel to Blade Runner, the tone was completely wrong. Very disappointing, overall. I suppose I'll have to suffer through another one in a couple years, though, assuming the box office numbers perk up a bit.

On a side-note, I'm glad I saw it on IMAX. As noted, it is a beautiful film and it looked great in that format.

was surprised how well the original had scrubbed up when i watched it the other night. however, i guess i'll just have to accept im a movie cretin. i don't doubt its influence in film and games, but it just didn't resonate with me.

that said, what the hell was admiral adama doing between 1982 and 2004?

The original isn't perfect. Dare I say it's even slightly over-rated, at least by those who consider it the zenith of science fiction. It is, however a beautiful mood piece with classic film noir moral ambiguity. It's not a daft action film with kung fu kicks and a cartoon evil capitalist villain reciting his evil plans in lines of fortune cookie bollocks from his subterranean swimming pool.
