The art was always the biggest draw of MTG for me.
The card seems fucking terrible though, unless I'm missing something.
It's not awful; it's a 4/4 for 3 colorless, and overcoming the drawback shouldn't be too much of a problem, provided you have a low curve of permanents in your most prominent color (assuming you're not going mono-colored, which would be even better). It probably made more sense in the expansion it was released in, which included split-colored casting costs.
It pairs really well with this, though:
