Would it be too hard to implement a form that promoters could fill out, and then it would just have to be approved or disapproved by someone (an admin or whatever) and it would automatically show up on the calendar (i.e. they submit the name, location, ticket link, hours, age, etc)?

all of that is in place and was working (the submission and moderation/approval system is actually very robust), except that us more hardcore fans here are WAAAAAY AHEAD of everyone else actually keeping track months out, while most promoters were only adding their events a couple weeks out. or for example, amonly announces their artists' booking long before promoters have any info ready. then there's also the issue of event details having to be updated several times over the life of a posting (@3 months out headliner announced, @2 months venue and promoters, @1 month ticket link and facebook event page). in some cases i even look up unfamiliar artists on last.fm to see what genres they play.
then the submissions that were added needed a lot of moderation because promoters tend to be a little aggressive: adding info in all caps, editorializing dj names "Tiesto (One night only!!!)", etc. i don't let promoters add 30 genres for their event, so i narrow it down to a couple. there's also promoters adding record labels after dj names, marking locals as headliners and promoters submitting events under their names even though they're just "street/flyer promoters" (for example, i'll give spundae "top billing" for fridays at ruby and mixed elements for saturdays at ruby instead of the occasional "co-promoters" who have their logo on the bottom of the flyer but do little more than send out an email).
all of this becomes tedious
so the crowd sourcing thing is all nice but you don't get moderated quality and it's definitely not as concise.
one of my new tasks will be to make a more compelling case for promoters to add their events early and/or support the site with paid banners and i'll start that by showing realtime site stats/views/uniques. the site's visitors are obviously some of the most frequent event attendees and the influencers among their friends, so the ROI is much better than street flyers and email spam.
like i said, updated site is almost done. mainly css styling tweaks at the moment.
jonmitz, i can give you login closer to re-launch.
