the selection process is understandable given the supply vs demand for this event. it's either hand-pick or raise the price and from my understanding the s&d vip yacht party is worth every bit the effort to experience

It's not bizarre or anything - they're just asking their biggest fans why he or she should be chosen. Musicians do this every day for their fans just get a rsvp for front row pits at their concerts. Those people still have to pay for their tickets as well.
If anything they're just leveling out the ticket buying field this way; rather than selling the tickets unknowingly to scalpers or rich Miami locals who just want to be on a boat party.
Every year this party is usually an invite only industry event.
Paying 100-150 for a boat party like this through a selection process is nothing in Miami. There are a few clubs I know of in Miami that will charge this much for an oversold night and there are others I've seen that charge you $100 just to stand in line; you still have to pay to get into the club once you reach the door.
i guess lee coombs was 86'd from 1015's march 30th slot. it's some drum and bass event now. first howells, now coombs, not a good friday :\
