I'm getting either a 10" or 12" JL Audio W7 sub for my BMW M3 - I'm wondering what everybody thinks would sound better for trance/techno music - a 10 or a 12.. opinions? thanks in advance!

A 10 is will have quick banging clear bass, which is what you want for trance/techno. A 12 will have deeper bass and it will be louder and longer if you know what I mean. This type of sub is good for Rap and Hip-Hop style music because the beats are deep and long and not quick and short like trance.

I have a single 12" Infinity perfect Pro 12.1 in my mid size SUV and it works great, so I'd go with 12W7-3 this is the one right?

thanks guys, I was thinking the same thing as grafal - techno/trance uses short hits of bass where a 10 would probably be better..
any more opinions on this?

i dunno how big a deal it would be. personally im of the viewpoint that i like to hear good music, and i dont give a fuck whether everyone within a 5 mile radius hears it, so i would say 10. i think the response time is more dependent on how much power you run thru it as well, so dont skank on the amp. esp with such an expensive sub|

nice choice in subwoofer brand. JL's have the smoothest, best sounding bass in its class.

Dance music has a fast beat. A small subwoofer will respond to the bass drum beat better as a smaller woofer takes less physical energy to move the whole cone. Of course you will need an appropriate amplifier to give the cone the required power to make it move. An underpowered sub will flap and the bass will sound "boomy". This is due to distortion. Good bass is "Tight".
JL Audio DO do a 12" W7, it is only recently that they have unveiled there new product the W7 Mk 2 (or is it called V2? i forget ) and the diameter of the sub is actually 13.5 inches. I assume this is to bridge the gap between 12" and 15" subs.
Also, get two subs, as the sound will distribute better throughout the car, especially since the subs will be in the trunk. My friend has 4 Alpine Type R subs in his BMW, and after many hours of testing and posistioning, he had them pointing towards the trunk lid as it created the best bass. If u have a hatchback car have the sub pointing away from the cabin.
Get the 10 inch. That way you'll be able to hear the highs and mids more then the lows

i say you go all out and get 4 12inch JL W7's. You will have your own rave party everyday in your car.

It's possible to get the same frequency response from a 10 and a 12. The important thing is tuning the enclosure correctly. There are a few programs yoiu can use - I've used BassBox Pro which is pretty accurate if u enter the specs correctly.
If u put a 10' in a HUGE box, you will get the "deep, boomy" bass as well. For tighter bass, I'd make a sealed enclosure slightly smaller than the reccomended size given on the spec sheet of the sub. This would mean u need to give it a bit more power to make it run to full potential. A 10' sub is also cheaper, meaning u can spend a bit extra on the amp, just to give the extra quality/power.
Generally speaking, I've found that pointing the sub to the rear of the car gives a better all-round response.
