I wouldn't say it's on the bottom of the foodchain, rather, it's on top, which is why it's subject to more bashings. There's a reason artists like DJ Sammy have made it so big - the trance form is very appealing to the masses, which is what makes it so much worse to the "better" genres that remain more underground.

And don't start claiming the more popular forms of trance aren't trance at all. They both use the same supersaw, the same climatic buildup and breakdown, the same use of female vocals, the same uplifting chord progression, the same drum machine, etc... Just because it's created to be a chart-topper with mass appeal doesn't automatically put it into another category. Look at the fundamentals - they're all the same, it's just the way in which it's percieved that makes them cheesy or not.

i get exactly the same thing mate. its a common thing in the uk and it fucking sucks. I just make them listen to me dj and then slip a few random tracks in that i know they will like and then they seem to decide that trance aint that bad.

The problem lies in the fact that while EDM lovers love to profess their 'acceptance' of other people's musical tastes they somehow, at the same time, love to hate on the trance sub-genre.

Trance is looked upon as this entry point into EDM and so anyone who must still like Trance either has not yet 'evolved' to the other genres and/or is assumed to be a clueless twat.

I love trance, and those who don't, well, that's fine too.

I'm not sure about "trance" being a dirty word, but there are certainly people with dirty -- as in obscured and clouded, not sexually perverse -- minds.

For example, if you go up to someone and start a conversation, and while conversing you say:

"I like trance music such as..."

only to find yourself suddenly cut off by an angry snarl of:

"I HATE TRANCE! TRANCE SUCKS!!"

That's a foremost example. Notice how you're interrupted even before going into the specifics. Notably, the divide is apparent when you talk to DnB elitists or those into the more experimental IDM/Braindance types of music but not much else. It doesn't say much about you. However, it does say something about the narrow minds and prejucice you'll encounter in your journeys.

But me? I love trance and I am grateful to the DJs and producers and all my fellow trance-listeners, and I'm proud to say it. Specifics? Well, I've namedropped plenty. Mwahahaha.

What I can't stand is the former trance lovers who have moved on to other genres and they know deny claims they ever loved trance. Some of us like me have never denied our histories, I grew up to eurodance in the mid 90's, I was a rocker before that. I think that trance, techno and other genres are dirty words at times because the public has a different view of it. Techno to most that live in Toronto is eurodance, trance is flip n fill and dj sammy and house is the lame 4 min commercial edits. I've given up on genre elitism because my tastes have grown to encompass so many genres now. I listen to what I like, I mean I listen to classical as well as EDM.

i agree..i dont listen to a track just because it is a certian genre..i will give any track a chance..i listen to good music not good genre..

Certain producers, I'll just avoid now because they have not changed anything but I'm game for just about anything new these days.
