I'm looking to get some monitors for home, and I really don't even know where to start. I did a search, and came up with next to nothing on the topic so I figured I'd start this one.
Please post what you currently own, what you paid, and a link to product information, etc.
I own two Peavey PV115 unpowered monitors that are 15' with 400w continuous and 800w program. Paid 750 for the two speakers and an amp.
I love them. A little loud on the ears sometimes with the highs but a good medium-level setup without busting your wallet with Mackies or JBLs.
Two thumbs up!
My neighbors hate me.
Luckily I only play during the day when they're at work. :P

they must be VERY loud if you play when your neighbours are out yet they STILL hate you!! Hahaha!
I own a pair of RP8s. I love them, such a detailed sound and more than loud enough, although I rarely crank them - that's not the point of a quality speaker. I also love the appearance of them, they're like solid smooth pieces of granite.
The beauty of a nearfield monitor is that it's designed to sound full and rich from a close range - and these certaily do that.
I highly recommend these. Expect to pay £350 for a pair in the UK with a bit of haggling.

was posting in the other thread of the krk rp5's but that thread is pretty much dead now
i was recommended the krk v6's but are those even produced anymore? everywhere i looked online said not in stock anymore or only one left...
what kind of monitors would best suit someone that is just going to keep them in the bedroom (so no need for insane loudness as for a party or anything)?

This thread should be added to the tutorial/sticky thread
I own the Event ALP5 and love them to death. For the price I don't know if I could have gotten any better. Paid like 440CDN inc tax and they are very nice. Overall the best feel out of the price range. Prefered them over the RP-5s. In hindsight I wish I went for the Event Tr-6, but they were too expensive for me.
Event rocks!
I feel comfortable producing on them and good sound for Djing as well

I have a pair KRK V6's.
I got a really good price at Guitar Center ($500) little less than a year ago. The sound is very detailed, and also loud enough. I've used them along with a sub for a few house parties and it worked out great.
I think they were discontinued.. not so sure tho..

Behringers are good for DJing. They're big, loud, and have good bass.
When you buy high end monitors, you pay for the FLATNESS of the frequency response. FLATNESS does not mean they sound GOOD. Infact, if you're used to the normal scooped mids of clubs/hifi systems, flat monitors will sound BAD.
You need flat monitors for producing, not DJing. Don't be a retard. Don't waste your money on "finesse" you can't appreciate; you're just a DJ, not a mastering engineer. If your mids are scooped +/-3db, it will make bugger all difference for DJing. Do you think in a club you could actually hear the difference anyway? It's so loud you probably can't even hear your own inner monologue. High end monitors train you for an environment which doesn't exist.

£350? wow thats good, i paid £229 for my RP5s and if i knew the 8's werent that much more i might have gone for them. Is there a huge difference in sound quality between the RP series? or is it mostly about volume and bass?
i agree on the looks, no visible seams and look and feel so solid, although ive found you need to set them up at the proper height and distances etc for them to sound their best
i use mine with an old REL sub to give the low end a bit more oomph and it seems to work great for me
i really love the way they still sound good at low volumes, but i suppose thats partially the point of monitors

I'm also in the process of buying speakers myself,
iv spent good time listening to different speakers at stores and I highly recommend the KRK RP8 speakers.
They sound very smooth and natural, I just love them.
I also listened to the Alesis M1s and just didn't think they had enough low end.
The Behrigners where pretty decent but I didn't like the way the high end sounded, too sharp for my liking.
The best thing you can do is get some tracks you know really well and take them into the store and have a listen to the speakers.
