Every Thursday night for the past six years in Calgary, Canada - a town more known for it’s giant rodeo than anything else, The Smalltown DJs hold down Dj duties at Hai Karate. A night that has more in common with the clubs of New York in 1980 than Calgary’s standard country bars, Hai Karate has caused a sensation in Calgary’s quiet streets. Pete Emes and Mike Grimes, aka Smalltown DJs, try to create a house party atmosphere each time they play, an approach that can make even the biggest venue an intimate one. The Smalltown DJs sound incorporates many styles, with one rule - It’s got to be funky - hip-hop, dancehall, funk, and breaks all find their way into the mix.
The Smalltown DJs have both been playing records in nightclubs since the mid nineties, but the pair started out on opposite sides of the globe. In early 1994, when Mike Grimes moved to Seoul, South Korea - to teach English, he had already been bitten by the DJ bug. It was that fall when he convinced a club owner in Seoul that despite Mike’s limited record collection, that he should be Sang Su Do’s new resident DJ. It was from that night that Mike was able to establish one of Korea’s first underground dance nights. Drawing from his early hip-hop and breaks influences and newer styles such as speed garage and
San Fransisco house, Mike and his crew pioneered Korea’s DJ scene, one which is now strong and constantly growing.
Around the same time, Pete Emes was a university student in London, Ontario, halfway between Detroit and Toronto. Despite coming away with a Bachelor of Scinece degree, Pete’s focus was definitely more centered around London’s dance scene - with regular appearances at house and frat parties by people such as Derrick Carter, Freaky Flow, and John Acquaviva. Pete’s love for acid jazz and hip-hop along with his newfound passion for jungle and house music became factors in his DJing start, but funky breaks were always number one. Pete and his roomates began throwing parties to help pay for school and to get a chance to play records for people.
In the summer of 1999, Pete and Mike had both returned to their hometown of Calgary, and realised that they had to join forces and combat the evil of bad music everywhere. With a sound that had evolved with nods to Jazzy Jeff, Freddy Fresh, Krafty Kuts,Malente and The Freestylers, they started Hai Karate at the Night Gallery Cabaret. Six years later the night is still going strong, having hooked up with C1RCA Footwear and moving to the HIFI Club and presented guests such as: Afrika Bambaataa, Soul of Man, Lyrics Born, Jeru the Damaja, Fort Knox Five, All Good Funk Alliance,The Allies, ,DJ Radar, DJ Assault, and Swollen Members.
With upcoming tours and an album on the way, watchout for the Smalltown DJs in your town

Big League Chu - www.bigleaguechu.com

Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada’s breakbeat scene today. After nearly a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that’s become Chu’s rallying call - and it’s one that crowds answer faithfully. Whether it’s at his residencies at Toronto’s legendary Breaksfest events, Fridays bi-weekly on the Dynacord at Boa-Redux, or every Saturday at Toronto's superclub the Docks.
In a city renowned as one of North America's largest party scenes, Chu has played alongside the worlds finest, allowing him to develop his own distinct style of breaks. Chu's sets can vary from hard beats to melodic funky down tempo sounds, but always remains a crowd mover.
The born and raised Torontonian began spinning in London, Ontario while taking his undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology at The University of Western Ontario. Chu quickly garnered attention at local parties, leading to gigs in Toronto, including the Dose event in the summer of 1999 when he was asked to fill in for Barry Weaver for his second appearance in the city. He so impressed organizers that Chu was then asked to play the 14,000 plus crowd at the annual Dose Freakin’ Halloween event later that year, and as since become a mainstay for Toronto's largest party companies, like Metro Productions (Kickit and Out of Hand), Lifeforce Industries (Dose, Syrous and Renegades), Empire, and Liquid Adrenaline.
Passion for music and fun are what motivates Chu, who plays the piano, flute and guitar, and counts the Dave Matthews Band and Public Enemy as his biggest musical influences. It’s this good-natured respect for good times and eclectic sounds that has garnered this humble DJ of Hong Kong and Singaporean descent to such a steady stream of press, from underground publications like Tribe and Klublife to mainstream outlets like the Toronto Star and Eye weekly.
Away from the turntables, Chu produces original tracks, both on his own and in collaboration with fellow DJ, Incog, under the moniker of Zoo Soundsystem, which recently released the track “Fever” on Toronto’s Promo Records. His future projects include releases on DJ Love’s Stellar Music label.
