Love is in the air [REVIEW] Radio 1 Weekend Ibiza August 10-15th 2005

well we all knew it was coming so here it is

Ibiza was fucking unreal and alot better then last year for the most part. i was in france for about three weeks and stayed in Ibiza for 5 days. got there on Wednesday the 10th and left monday the 15th...
As soon as i stepped off the plane that balearic feeling just hits me and i just knew it was gonna be an insane weekend!

First things first, the view from my hotel:

Here's the full day by day Party Review.....

Wednesday 8.10.05:

got to my hotel and unpacked everything, then went for a quick walk and it started to rain which was odd for ibiza but i still had hope that there would be a nice sunset at Cafe Mambo, and i was def. rite. Got to Cafe Mambo at around 8 for the Subliminal Sessions Pre Party with Erick Morillo and Jose Nunez spinning, along w. the rest of the Subliminal crew. Cafe Mambo is a beautiful place and pre parties are always good. Jose Nunez played some really good tracks and it was my first time seeing him spin and he is really good. Then i saw Erick Morillo cruising by on his way to the decks so i said wats up real quick and got a pic.

Erick Morillo

Morillo got on after sunset at about nine and ripped it up. Sunsets in Ibiza are legendary and as soon as the sun sets, there are always hundreds or even thousands of people on the beach and everybody claps and screams which is a pretty cool sight and feeling. Seeing Morillo was another first for me and he totally owned everybody even though it was just a warm up set.

As i was leaving Cafe Mambo, i caught Felix the Housecat on his way in, he wasn't spinning or anything, he just came to chill and have a good time

Felix da Housecat

It was then off to Pure Pacha for Subliminal Air Sessions with Erick Morillo, Jose Nunez, Hex Hector, and Angel Moraes.

I got there at like 12:30 which was kinda of a mistake since there is nobody there til 2 so i was just walking around for a while. But from 2 o' clock on the place was absolutely packed and you could barely move, let alone dance. But i made my spot so it wasn't that bad. except for the fact that everybody pushes you every 2 seconds to get by. The opening DJ played a really good set and the best part of it was when he was playing live to his own set.

Then Jose Nunez came on and blew up the place with his hard and melodic set his set was better then Morillo's IMO. The Highlights of his set were

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Roman Flugel - Geht's Noch (Steve Angello vs Whos vs Who Mix)
Rachel Starr - Til There was You (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)

He played from 2-4 and then Morillo, Hex Hector, and Angel Moraes played a tag team set from 4 to about 8 something. I thought it was pretty cool how they were all working together and kept switching around. they played a good set and the place was jumpin'. Pacha is a really cool club and the vibe is defenetely high class. Ibiza truly has the most beautiful people in the world

Anyway i left at about 6:45 because i just had no energy left from the plane and the long day. so it was off to San Antonio bay for a couple hours of long awaited sleep.

Thursday 8.11.05:

Well woke up at around 4PM, walked around town and went shopping for some shirts and posters then went back to my hotel to get ready for my most anticipated night of the year, Cream's 10th Birthday Party @ Amnesia!!

The Pre Party was at Coastline Cafe and Mylo was gonna spin, and since i knew i was not gonna leave my spot in the main room @ Amnesia, i figured this would be my only chance to see him spin. Got there at about 8 and was just chillin and walking around. i saw that next door Steve Lawler was spinning at Sun Sea Bar for his pre party for Space so i stopped by to find that he was spinning to himself pretty much since there was nobody in that whole place. so i said hey, got a picture and went back to Coastline.

Steve Lawler

Mylo came on from 11-12 and he played some pretty good tunes. the only thing i remember was Drop The Pressure, plus a bunch of his own tracks, but i didn't stay til the end because i wanted to get to Amnesia at 12 as soon as the doors opened. So i grabbed a cab and was on my way...

The Line up for Cream's 10th Birthday Party was: Tiesto, PvD, Nu Nrg, and on the terrace was Mylo, Jacques Lu Cont, Annie Mac.
And there is no way that it could be a bad night with that line up!

So i got in at 12:15 when they opened the doors and went straight to the main room in the same spot i was last year, which is really the best spot in the club because its on the big podium on top of the 2 stairs in the middle of the floor. Gareth Wyn opened up the club from 12-1. He had played the same slot the year before when i was there and he played a nice hard set. As soon as you walk into Amnesia the sound system just grabs you and never lets you go, it truly is the best sound system in the world because of how deep and strong the bass is, along with the unbelievable sound it delivers

Tiesto came on from 1-3:45 and played a pretty good set, not as good as last year but still pretty good. He was really into it and laid down some really good tracks. The Highlights of his set were:

In My Memory
Adagio for Strings
Lethal Industry
BACK TO BACK!!!

That was truly an insane moment and a beautiful way to end his set. he came off kinda quick tho and Nu Nrg kicked off with Dreamland (Nu Nrg remix) which was absolutely sick!! They played an amazing set even though it was only from 3:45-4:15. Every track was melodic and i wish i could ID them. The coolest part about their set was the PvD was waiting to get on and he was dancing like crazy, he was loving it and he was all over the place. Which was nice to see since he is usually so shy. He was really enjoying himself!

The Man himself came on right after Nu Nrg and started off with just the vocals from The Other Side, then came in the beat and the place went mental, i know i did! i was singing every word as loud as i could and that probably was the moment of the year for me He played an amazing set and every track was bangin'. The best part about Amnesia is the LED equalizer and the massive smoke machines which go off as soon as the track goes off after a nice build up, and it is so powerful that you can't see shit for about 30 seconds. it is magical! The Highlights of PvD's set were:

Paul van Dyk - The Other Side
Paul van Dyk - For an Angel
Wolfsheim - Wundervoll (Blank & Jones Mix)

Hearing him play For an Angel in Ibiza was truly a classic moment, it's the only place he should really play it, because it describes Ibiza. Anyway he spun til about 7:30 and only did one encore which was one of the slow piano tracks that he loves to play at the end of his sets. Then the house lights went up for the last time of the night and everybody slowly cleared out. I was then waiting outside for a taxi since the Discobus had left before i had gotten there. I had remembered that the year before, PvD came down the stairs from the VIP Terrace and into a van so i waited in front of the van with a couple other people in hope that i could get a picture. but he came down and jumped in the van after not even a minute of signing a couple things and left so no picture but an amazing night @ Amnesia as usual!!

Friday 8.12.05:

After a couple hours of sleep, it was off to Cafe Mambo once again for the Radio 1 10 Years in Ibiza Essential Selection Party!!!

The Line up was: Pete Tong, Paul van Dyk, David Guetta, Timo Maas, Supafly vs. Fishbowl, Jamie Cullum, Steve Mac & Steve Smith...
I got a great spot right up front and i was so ready for a sick 3 hour show, and a crazy Radio 1 Weekend in Ibiza! There were a couple PA's throughout the show which were really good and everybody was singing every word of every song. I was really hyped about seeing PvD perform The Other Side live with Wayne Jackson and i was not disappointed!! it was a great performance and PvD was playing the keyboard while Wayne Jackson was singing and playing the guitar. As Sunset was approaching, Pete introduced Jamie Cullum and his brother and they got up and played two sunset tracks together and it was a cool moment because the sunset was mesmorizing and everybody was going off, clapping and screaming! Then David Guetta stepped up to the decks for his 20 minute Hot Mix and it was sooo good. He is such a good DJ and i love his style, i wish he played at Pure Pacha that night like last year because the F*** Me I'm Famous parties are unreal Then Timo Maas came on and put together a great mix but by that time i was inside by the DJ Booth trying to see who was there and trying to get autographs. well i got alot more than that!!!

Fergie

Pete Tong

Paul Oakenfold!!!!

Wow i had been waiting sooo long to take a picture with him!!!

David Guetta

Timo Maas

Nic Fancuilli

As you guys can tell, that was a really good nite for me OMG i didn't even know what to think after all that, i could have left and gone home happy!! After the show i hung around for a while and then went back to my hotel to change for Pure Pacha

(Supafly vs. Fishbowl)

(Faithless)

(Steve Mac & Steve Smith)

(Jamie Cullum)

- Essential Selection Tracklisting -

After that it was off to Pure Pacha for Zenith's 10th Birthday @ Pacha. The Line up was: Pete Tong, Todd Terry, Carlos Diaz and Richard Gray. I got there at around 1:45 to a packed club. There was a little room to dance so it was pretty good.

Richard Gray opened the nght from 12-2 and he played a good warm up set filled with balearic tracks that made the vibe so good.
Todd Terry came on at 2 and played til 4. He played a real good set and got Pacha jumpin'. His set had some good energy and some really good tracks all mixed really well.

Pete Tong came on at 4 and i found it to be a little slow in the middle of his set but he then picked it up towards the end. From 2-6 i was dancing on the podium/stage by the DJ booth and was having a great time, especially when Pete dropped Chab Feat JD Davis - Closer To Me it was the first time i heard it and it is such a great track! But at the end of his set everyone was kicked off stage and i didn't know why at the time, but 15 minutes later, Chris Cox gets on as Pete drops More Intensity and Chris Cox played the guitar live which was really cool to see, the next track he dropped was Deep End which is Pete & Chris' new track with vocals from SK8. So she gets on stage and all 3 played it together and it was a pretty good track. Not as good as More Intensity but it still has that Ibiza vibe to it. Next up was Carlos Diaz and i didn't stay for his whole set but it was pretty good, it all sounded the same tho so that's why i left at 7:15

Saturday 8.13.05:

Once again, after only a couple hours of sleep, it was off to Cafe Mambo for the Space Pre Party. It actually wasn't much of a pre party because it started from 3PM and Space was opening at 7PM for a 12+ Hour night. But it was nice to just relax and chill for a little bit and then head off to Space for Radio 1's Special 12 Hour Broadcast 10 Years of Ibiza on Radio 1 Party.

Pete Tong just walking around promoting on the Beach

So i headed to Space at 7 and got there at like 7:45 because there is always a massive line for taxis in San Antonio. But it's ok because Space didn't open til 7:40 anyway. I got mad because Space is the only club on the whole island that doesn't let you bring your camera in, they take it away and you have to pay 2 euros for them to hold it for u I was so looking forward to taking alot of pictures but that didn't happen. Anyway, i walk in and went straight to the New Terrace (which is fully roofed but it still feels like a terrrace somehow) to find that it is the biggest room in the whole club and spent most of my night there. I then went upstairs to the Premier Etage which is more or less a chill out area to find that Judge Jules was broadcasting his show from there. so i talked to him and told him i was talking to him @ Avalon and i asked him what time Jon o Bir was playing since that was the only set i was really looking forward to; besides Morillo's, Deep Dish, and Laurent Garnier's of course He told me he was spinning at ten in the main room so i headed off to the terrace for a while. On my way was an open air room and Nic Fancuilli was spinning to absolutely nobody and i kinda felt bad for him so i stayed for a minute and gave him a thumbs up and ur amazing type gesture and he saw me and he got a smile on his face and continued playing.
Morillo was on the decks when i went back to the Terrace and he absolutely owned me!! He is unreal and every track was better then the last, it was a magical set and i can't wait to see him again... I then found my old friend Roy which i had met last year at Amnesia and he got me into VIP that nite
He was there with his girlfriend, brother and his friend and we all chilled together the whole night.

When 10PM hit i went straight to the main room to see Jon o Bir spin but they didn't open it up til close to 11, so i went back and forth from the terrace until it was finally opened and i was one of about 5 people dancing to his set, it soon got packed with people but i didn't care, i was dancing like crazy all over the place. Jon o Bir really is gonna be the next superstar DJ, there is no doubt in my mind. Highlight of his set was defenetely Hammer & Bennett - Language (Santiago Nino Dub Tech Mix) i went all out when he dropped that!! His whole set was mindblowing and he played hard from start to finish, the last track he played was Ernesto vs Bastian - Dark Side of The Moon which was played live by all 3 members of the group. I was not expecting it and it turned out to be a pretty good performance. As Jon came off the decks i was talking to him and told him that i saw him in NYC for NYE when he opened for PvD and that he played an amazing set, he was like thank you very much and i asked him when he was gonna come back and he said hopefully at the end of the year, fingers crossed!! He's a really cool guy and i can't wait til he comes back to NYC

Above and Beyond came on and i didn't feel like hearing them spin so i went back to the terrace to hear Pete Tong finish his set. He played alot better than he did the night before at Pacha. He also finished off with the same live performance of More Intensity and Deep End with Chris Cox and SK8 which was a nice surprise. It was then time for Laurent Garnier to spin and it was my first time seeing him so i was pretty excited. He played a pretty good set although i did find it to be repetitive at some points but it was still a good set.

As soon as Deep Dish came on, they set the place on fire with their mindblowing set. These are the first 3 tracks they played:

Mansun - Wide Open Space (Paul Oakenfold Remix)
Deep Dish vs. Dire Straights - Flashing for Money (Sultan Remix)
Paul van Dyk - The Other Side (Deep Dish Remix)

it was RIDONKULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Hearing Wide Open Space was def. the track of the night, everybody was going mental at that point and it was such a great moment! They played from 3-6 and i loved every minute of it. Then Laurent Garnier came back on from 6-7:50 and spun an amazing set, much better then his first one, it was alot harder and just better overall. It was a great moment as the sun was coming up over the terrace and it was cool to think that when i walked in it was daylight and i spent the whole night dancing to amazing music! I was the last one to leave because i went to talk to Laurent Garnier and for him to sign my flyer. They seriously had to open the doors for me since they had locked everything up and they were just there cleaning up
I get outside and there is already a long line for We Love Sundays @ Space which ran from 8am to 6am the next day but i didn't stay for that even though i got a wristband for free admission.

The only pic i got inside... of me and my UK friends

Sunday 8.14.05:

After that ridiculous night at Space, i got a couple hours of sleep and then headed off to Cafe Mambo for Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems.
Got there at around 6:15 or so and met up with my friends from the nite before and was chilling on the rocky beach of Cafe Mambo.

The show was from 8-10PM and Cafe Mambo was packed with people, most of the tracks were really good and the line up was....

It was my first time listening to Dave's show and it was pretty good, i really is just Dance Anthems but i enjoyed the whole show except for when he played Sandstorm. That was not cool but it wasn't that big a deal. It was also really cool to see Technotronic perform Pump up the Jam live! The Sunset was amazing as usual and the crowd was going nutz the whole time.

I caught Fergie again and he has just come back from scuba diving so i had to take a picture with him because it was so funny!

I also got a couple more good pics

Judge Jules

Sander K

Dave Pearce

Pete Gooding

After the show there was the pre party for Sander K @ Pacha so it was just party after party, it was really cool.

Then it was off to Judgement Sundays with Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell, Marco V, Trophy Twins, and Vicky Devine.

Got there at around 1 to find an empty room, so i walked around to explore the club a lil bit and then came back downstairs to find that i was surrounded by dumb brits! I did not like the vibe at all it kinda killed the night for me, it was just a bunch of retarted brits that were all drunk and fucked up, not cool at all. But the music defenetely made up for it. Vicky Devine was the opening and closing resident. She played a pretty good opening set, and a great closing set.

Marco V got on from 1:30 to 3. It was my first time seeing him and he played a really good set. I can't remember what tacks he played but it seemed like a typical Marco V set, and he seemed to be haveing a good time with it.

Marco V

Judge Jules then came on from 3-4:30. He played a really good set. By that point i was on the side of the decks because i coudn't take all those rowdy brits (thanks for the warning brian). The Highlight of his set was Freefall - Skydive i still can't believe he played that track, it was so good to hear it.

The set i was looking forward to the most was Eddie Halliwell and as soon as he came on the whole club was going mental!! Eddie played an amazing set from start to finish as usual and he tore the roof off that place with his exceptional skills He is such a technical genius and he was all over the place nonstop with his mixing and scratching. Highlight of his set was Fred Baker - Total Blackout. I was going nutz as soon as he dropped it and plus with his ridonkulous mixing skills, it was just so much better! At the end of his set he stood up on top of the decks and Stage Dived!!!!! it was the first time i had ever seen that and i was shocked when he did it but it was just so cool to see. Eddie truly is a great DJ and i can't wait til he comes back around. He was there with his girlfriend and she was really nice, she pulled him over at the end of his set so i could get a picture with him After he was done, Vicky Devine came back on to finish off the night.
Eddie Halliwell was signing flyers for about 20 minutes, its cool to see that he takes to much time out for his fans. After he got off the decks he was talking to this other guy and signed his goodgreef shirt and i started talking to him. I was like yeah i saw you in New York last month and you totally ripped it, so he paused for a second then says, oh yeah you had the cream shirt on, i remember you! that really took me back that he actually remembered me, it felt pretty good. Then he said thank you so much for the support and gave me a hug and a friendly kiss on the hand. I still can't believe he remembered me, i just found it so cool. Well after that i left and headed to my hotel which was a 5 minute walk which was nice because i needed a couple minutes to chillout from 5 consecutive days of straight partying!

Vicky Devine & Eddie's Girlfriend

Well after that all i did was sleep for 2 hours, got a couple last souvenirs (bottles of absinthe, shotglasses...) and went to the airport

Not that i have a problem, but this isn't the most 56K friendly thread. I'll read this when i get home later, but looks like fun from a quick glimpse. Pete Tong looks sooo cracked in that one pic.
