Yo Lira,
I watched those Brazilian flicks you recommended-
"Tropa de Elite" e "Tropa de Elite 2"
they were AWESOME
the only thing i didn't like was how both of the stories were framed the exact same way - dive headfirst into a scene 3/4 into the story with the intro shot and then back track and play up to there. they both did the same thing!!

I still have not seen those, but I guess their director is doing the new Robocop reboot.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Nov-10-2011 20:11:

Well here's a guess for how that film will play out:
It'll start with 5 minutes of action that leads up to Robocop about to be dismantled.
Flash over city and read "5 months before"
robocop, or whoever the protagonist is, will give a monologue as the camera focuses in on our setting.
this bit will remain constant throughout the film - as some new scenes come into focus, establishing setting, the protagonist will deliver a monologue.

Was interested in this

having seen the trailer not too long ago. Herzog has a way with words and I've always been fond of his work. Just now I read Ebert's review on Into The Abyss and I'm even more anxious to see it. I was amazed to learn that the film was put together from interviews that he did upon first meeting them, in that one day!

I'm also interested in this:

as I think Peter Mullan is awesome (Session 9!!!!!).

Okay, put Bellflower on my "Best of 2011" list.

Just watched The Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio for you yanks)

I liked it. Apparently the movie was a commercial failure and can understand why, its not the sort of blockbuster action packed flick i would go and see on the big screen, but for something to put on on a foggy saturday afternoon in november, its really good. And the great thing about movies or tv shows set in the 60s is they contain tons of era appropriate music, which this does.

This movie had SO much in it. I thought it was really cool, fresh, and original. Young actor/filmmaker seems quite talented, but it was severely lacking in clarity imo. The ideas were there and the acting was strong but it rubbed me the wrong way at times.

[possible spoilers for those who haven't seen it]

What exactly wasn't clear there? Do you mean Woodrow's revenge sequence, which then turns out as a hallucination? I think the tragedy of all that is actually stronger if it's first played straight (more or less) and then shown as nothing but a fantasy. It's not like the film doesn't allude to this earlier; in the beginning you see some of the shots from later parts of the film so it's clear it's not going to have a simple linear storyline.

only now I've realised that The Shining was nominated for two Razzie awards - worst actress, and worst director. ffs.

Posted by Vector A on Nov-22-2011 17:49:

Her acting really is abysmal. But worst director? No.

well yeah, it wasn't a great performance, but didn't deserve a razzie either, and to nominate kubrick? that's just fucking ridickulase

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-22-2011 17:56:

Her acting was horrific. She was horrified and weepy and annoying. Like a scared bitch.

It was perfect.

Posted by WittyHandle on Nov-22-2011 18:11:

I hope she won for worst actress. She was annoying as fahk.

She was bad even before the part where she got chased with an ax.
