Ahhh, I see what you mean. And yeah, it had a certain amount of kitsch to it, but so did the original stories and many of his cinematic incarnations since - I thought it was a great nod to a variety of Holmes interpretations over the last century. Downey Jr's accent may have been off, but the fact that both him and the actual character were both coke fiends was a terrific casting call, whatever the level of intention behind it.

I wonder who will play a competent Moriarty should they continue...

haha... yeah good point about the cokehead comparison. I'm not tryin' to hate on it. It seems like the kind of movie that's specifically made for people who like to go see something fun at the movies, like Iron Man. Nothing wrong with that.

I never saw Iron Man, was it good?

Yeah it was fucking cool as shit. Can't wait for the sequel.

Posted by The17sss on Mar-24-2010 19:37:

yeah man... I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoyed it. I just hope the sequal doesn't fuck it up like Batman & Robin did to that franchise.

not a movie, but a tv show, yet it should be counted as a movie (2 seasons).

"Twin Peaks". watching a couple of episodes, and wow. what a tv show. i would love to see what is inside david lynch's mind.

^^ Probably my favorite TV show of all time. Paved the way for Lost for sure.

indeed. it's the concept of thinking "out the box" rather than "inside the box" is what caught my eye.

i may have seen parts of what you are talking about. i believe it's the 2nd to last series finale episode where the villian kidnaps the miss twin peaks winner by flashing lights and causing chaos in front of everyone, giving him the chance to get the winner. the previous episode felt like a build up filler episode to give the viewers a chance to understand who the characters are. in that episode, the villian kidnaps a (colonel/admiral??) guy and brings him the the black lodge.

just watching those 2 episodes i know this has to be a good tv show. i'm going to try to find this box set.

Posted by WittyHandle on Mar-28-2010 17:11:

The Gold Box set is the way to go for Peaks. It has every episode over 10 discs, including the proper pilot, which was held back for a long time.

Bob is the scariest character I've ever seen on the small screen.

Dale Cooper's dream and the Finale are epic mindfuckedness. I find horror movies ridiculous but Lynch movies are the only film productions that scare the hell out of me.

Posted by Meat187 on Mar-28-2010 20:33:

Twin Peaks has by far the greatest characters from all TV shows. Other shows usually have 1 or 2 side characters that are somewhat different, weird and just not your normal nice guy protagonist. Twin Peaks is full of them, and everyone is awesome.
I jizzed a little bit in my pants every time I read that Miguel Ferrer appears in an episode, cause Albert Rosenfield was just gold. Then there's the log lady, Lynch himself as Gordon Cole, Andy, that awesome old waiter who finds Cooper after he's shot... and really just everyone. Sigh, they don't do em like that anymore.

They didn't do em like that beforehand either.

I was obsessed with Twin Peaks. I used to hold the antennae for the whole hour of the show sometimes because our reception was iffy. At one point I was so into it I started calling Lynch / Frost studios and talking to their receptionist regularly about what was going on in the show and she'd tell me about little behind the scenes stuff. Her name was Gaye Pope (no joke). I don't know where I got the idea to start doing that.

I had been telling her for a while about how Bob scared the shit out of me, but how much I loved it. One night, I got a random call and the guy told me his name was Frank Silva, the actor who played Bob. I was ecstatic, as he was the coolest thing on planet Earth to me at the time. He told me David Lynch chose him for the role because he was locked in a costume room one day (he was a costume designer) and Lynch saw the surveillance tape of him prowling around the room trying to escape. Wikipedia says otherwise, but that's what he told me. A few weeks later, he sent me an autographed 8X10 head shot which I still have framed in my bedroom. I was saddened to hear when he died of AIDS.

I loved Twin Peaks. It exposed me to how much deeper and better things can be if an artist is given a platform to fully express their vision.

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Mar-28-2010 23:16:

unfortunately for me, when twin peaks was on tv, i was 10/11, and didn't appreciate the type of art david lynch loves to emphasize in his shows and movies.

but cool story. good to hear hollywood actually gave you a call back.

Posted by jupiterone on Mar-28-2010 23:19:

not a single 10-20 minutes of a film has blown my mind like space odyssey, srsly

the whole beginning of civilization thing they do is just so phenomenal, creative and open minded, it's ridiculous. i watched it stoned the first time and never once watched it sober again

ok am going to watch the other parts when i get the chance. see where are movies like this?

imagine watching this short movie on the big screen. most likely 50% of the audience would leave halfway through the movie, because they would think it's boring, 20% would fall asleep, 25% would run out during the credits not really grasping the concept of the film, and 5% of the audience would sit throughout the whole credits just to watch in awe what type of movie it is.

someone explained it best when they said it's meant to be experienced not just watched. To be honest I still have not watched all of them at one sitting. But that's because I'm at home with a lot of options but I been a deep Lynch fan for 9 to 10 years now, if I went to a theater to see this... I would be in the 5% that would stay to the end. Look into The Straight Story by David Lynch, it's different than any of his other works, it's more heart felt than weird and disturbing like most of his movies are, to put it simple it stands out from all of his other works

Anyone watch Scorsese's Shitty Island??

Honestly, wtf. Why so terrible?

Posted by LeopoldStotch on Mar-29-2010 04:53:

trying to watch more David Lynch movies has been something on my movie list for awhile. Unfortunately, the only wide release film i've seen of his is "Mulhullond Drive", and i thought that movie was fantastic. Some people have recommended to me 'Eraserhead', 'The Elephant Man', 'Blue Velvet', and 'Inland Empire'. well, basically all his films.

'Cargo'

good movie. catch this movie if you like science-fiction meets action drama. the graphics are just amazing, the cinematography was spot on, and the movie flow was pretty solid for a science fiction film. the twist at the end of the movie was pretty good. one thing i felt was questionable was the ending of the film. i thought they just ran out of funds to make the movie, so they just threw something up.

other than that, i like it.
