Ben Affleck has apparently found his calling as a director.

Lord knows he can't act.

not sure what to think of this... but it's getting solid reviews and I'm going to see it tonight. it's supposed to be real, not some blair witch faux documentary, but you never know.

I was hesitant at first but I ended up really liking it.

The Social Network was very well done. I know people will knock it just because it's about Facebook, but it's really about a guy starting a massively successful business and some shady dealings along the way. The acting was impressive, and the dialogue was very sharp and entertaining.

I watched this very low budget film with my girlfriend the other morning called Lo. We were both very, very impressed.

There are only a few set pieces and actors, but the gist of the story is that a man summons a powerful demon to enlist its help in retrieving his girlfriend, who has been kidnapped by other demons and presumably been taken into Hell. An excellent script and cheap - yet effective - props, makeup, and sets ensue. The acting was merely ok, but it was clear that a lot of the experience of the production was rooted in stage performance, not to mention the fact that the entire movie could be converted into a theatrical play quite easily, given the threadbare circumstances of its presentation. I was very pleased with its cleverness.

I was watching that the other night, Hal. It felt like a theatrical play to me. I don't really share your sentiment about the effectiveness of the movie though. I just couldn't get past the acting and because of that I was unable to continue watching after the first 45 or 55 minutes. I thought it was an interesting story with some refreshing dialogue, absolutely, but still- the makeup on Lo really didn't do it for me and the acting..well, yeah.
If you thought the ending was improved the film in some way I might give it another shot.

Yes, I very much feel that way. Give it a full chance now that you kind of know what to expect.

Has anyone seen Hausu aka House?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076162/

If not, you MUST watch it! The whole movie is one weird trip of and breaking every single imaginable movie convention. It's cheesy, fun and weird weird weird! Seriously, if you can throw all your expectations towards a normal movie (including effects, logic and storytelling) overboard then watch Hausu and be amazed by all the crazy shit happening.

:/

I saw the movie "Never let me go" with andrew garfield, kiera knightley, and carey mulligan. A solid movie, and met my expectations. I say it's on my list as best movies of 2010.

Solid directing.
Excellent photography of britian as a whole, expecially the countryside.
Superb movie score.

Pretty stoked about this year's film festival here.

The list is a lot stronger than previous years.

Ha, just saw the trailer for 127 Hours about the buy who got his arm stuck under the rock in a crevasse and hacked it off. Looks so cheese, complete with girls making out scene, which I'm sure happened in the story somehow

Anyone see Buried? I'm wondering how Ryan Reynolds pulled off a movie almost completely filmed with him in a box.

This thread is useless. Nobody ever listens to my recommendations.

Casino Jack

based on Jack Abramoff the former super political lobbyist.

not a bad movie. tastefully done.

In the spirit of today's election I highly recommend watching this trailer, modeled after The Social Network.

I watched Eden Lake yesterday.

Not bad actually, despite some shortcomings.
But what could be scarier than little brats with thick English (?) accents?

Post here when you've seen it.
It's so kick ass weird and that I totally need to convince some friends to watch it over a few beers.

Dawn O’Keefe (Jess Weixler) is a teenage spokesperson for a Christian abstinence group called The Promise. She attends groups with her two friends, Gwen (Julia Garro) and Phil (Adam Wagner). One evening after giving her speech talking about the purity ring those in the group wear and what it means, she is introduced to Tobey (Hale Appleman) and finds him attractive.

The four begin going out as a group, and Dawn has fantasies of marrying Tobey, although after acknowledging the attraction they agree that they cannot spend time together. Soon after they give in and meet at a local swimming hole. After swimming together, they go in to a cave to get warm and begin kissing. Tobey then forces himself on Dawn; in the panic her vagina bites off his penis. Horrified, he stumbles away and she flees the scene. After a Promise meeting, she meets her classmate Ryan (Ashley Springer) at a dance; they talk, and he drops her off at her home.

Dawn researches "vagina dentata" and realizes she may have it, then she visits a gynaecologist, Dr. Godfrey (Josh Pais) in an attempt to find out what is happening to her. Finding out that she has never visited a gynaecologist before, he attempts to take advantage of her by saying he is performing a test, when what he is really doing is molesting her. She panics and her vagina bites off the fingers on his right hand. On her way back, she sees someone driving in Tobey's car, and she goes back to visit the pool. When she gets there she sees the police bringing up Tobey's body. At home, her ill mother, Kim O'Keefe (Vivienne Benesch) collapses, Dawn's stepbrother, Brad (John Hensley) and his girlfriend Melanie (Nicole Swahn) ignore her and continue to have sex while she lies on the floor. Kim is taken to the hospital.

Dawn goes to Ryan seeking help and the two successfully have sex. The following morning they have sex again, but mid-coitus Ryan’s friend calls, and Dawn learns that he had a wager on having sex with her. In her anger, her vagina bites off his penis, and she leaves him to call his mother for help.

Dawn learns her mother has died, and after her stepfather Bill (Lenny Von Dohlen) attempts to throw Brad out, Brad sets his dog on Bill. Dawn meets her stepfather and Melanie at the hospital, and emboldened by her power, she goes back home to seek revenge. Dawn puts on make-up and goes to her stepbrother, and they engage in sex. In the middle of the act, Brad recalls when he was younger and his finger was bitten by Dawn, that it wasn’t her mouth that bit him. As he realizes this, Dawn’s vagina bites off his penis. She releases it on the ground, and Brad’s dog eats it, spitting out the glans and genital piercing. Dawn leaves him to bleed to death.

Dawn cycles away from home, but her bike tire sustains a puncture, so she begins hitchhiking. She gets a lift from an old man (Doyle Carter), but when she reaches the next gas station and tries to get out, he locks the doors. He licks his lips as if to ask for a sexual favor to release her; Dawn hesitates, and then looks towards the camera -and the old man- with a seductive smile.
