Singing the groove, what?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jun-29-2014 03:25:

it sounds like a kick, and something else. A good bottom has a certain flow. That is what i mean by singing it. Yours would be like cowl music.

The kicfk and the bass are really 2 elements that weave into one. Right now, they don't

Posted by PaULiN0 on Jun-29-2014 03:47:

Its not suppose to flow like you think because it doesn't have any rich lower harmonics because its a high note?

There's so many tracks like the one i made. If your right then I guess its all up my kickdrum then.

Posted by djnitride on Jun-29-2014 05:50:

Sounding good Juan. The main thing that stands out to me as being off is the kick, it doesn't sound right with that bass. The bass definitely sounds right, but the kick is just a bit too airy/low end heavy I guess? Not sure exactly how to describe it.

Posted by PaULiN0 on Jun-29-2014 06:07:

Aye, yeah thats it. Are there any ways to determine how a kick fits with a bass. I usually use G or F as my sub bass and so on. This is my first time using A. I'll try to find a smoother kick that can compliment the A note bass. I see now groove is important. Thanks man, and this def not a pat on the back like some idiot before mentioned.

Thumbs up

cheers for the comments before, very useful.

cheers

Yeah I like dis, sounds like old school corsten. Sounds better than the shit thats released today on the big labels. Good shit man. Everything fits.

Alright buddies, lets give it a try now.

I think this kick has more groove.

well all the tracks I'm doing are vocal in that it is a artist group , not a producer. Jamiroquai meats daft punk. And yup , i will be singing. Basically just modern funk. i guess that qualifies as ddm.

All richie patches from scratch

normally i wouldn't show this but was up all night and everything just came together including the lyrics

and i have the best artist name ever. 8 months till launch. I plan to hire a ghost dj.

You got something funky going on in this short WIP man, if you properly construct the rest and mix it appropriately the you may have a winner lol --> and I would never imagine myself saying that to you couple years ago --> this have some style

Thank you darek.

Alright here it is. This is my first wip carving out my own path. No references what so ever. Thoughts on what genre it files under?

Quite interesting approach man, elegant and nicely drive bass line with good and vibrant drums supporting it

As far as melody line, well it is always hard to judge as everyone of us has some different elements/preferences which we are looking for in it - but I like what I heard so far.

You are getting closer and closer my friend

sounds pretty good man. but I think the sub could use a bit of punch.

bass that comes in at 1:07 doesnt fit, its not needed. You shouldnt add a mid-bass just because. You can hear that bass is choking the kick
Try a deeper subbier bassline maybe

the groove at the start is quite nice and is working

Yeah sorry its the subass that sided chained to the kick. I did it because one of the pattern of notes falls one of the kick drums. I'l make more improvements and see what I can do.

track of how I feel at the moment. I've kinda abused compressor in this, and reverb.. would be interesting to hear what you think..

Posted by TranceElevation on Jul-01-2014 01:07:

Mate, that clap doesn't really fit there. You have a nice deep atmosphere and that bright clap grabs too much attention causing an abrupt contrast to what's under and around.

1. You could lower the volume to put it a bit in the background and blend it more with the rest.

2. Low pass it, quite a bit actually, which might be more assonant to such atmosphere.

3. Seems like you're using a shorter verb for the clap, which again, detaches it too much from the rest.

cheers man, have made the changes you suggested; you are right it was too bright

have added a vocoded bit, but the vocoder is playing up in render time, so I'll have to fix it to make it sound sweeter tomoz

thanks again - updated version in it's place

quite nice, clap sounds ok to me now. Bass i think is slightly too loud. You can hear the compressor alright, do you have one on the mixbus?

cheers matey - yes, it's hyper overcompressed on the mixbuss - I love the sound generally, the dancing of the reverb tails as they get over compressed, but it has some disadvantages too - the bass sometimes dips it a little too much and messes with the groove. i know at some point I've got to fix that, but that kind of thing takes a while (to keep the general sound but maintain the bass and bass drum working together) so I'm leaving it to the end!

this track is a bit of an emotional one for me, I can feel it when I'm producing it. I'm watching my sister on her bed in the hospital, the morphine is the only thing that makes it tolerable for her, and just barely so. I wanted that feeling in the track, and I think it's there. writing this in between visits keeps me off the red wine.

really appreciate you guys taking the time to listen to this - it's kind of cathartic. I know this track is never going to be played anywhere, but it's not really for that.

have just updated it, it's getting rather long!

Music is always there, it can get you through the toughest of times.

The thing abut mixbus compression is that if your kick isnt driving the mixbus compressor, and instead other things are e.g. bass, heavy percs - then the groove will be a bit fucked up and the mix wont pump they way its supposed to

Thanks evo8 - you're absolutely right, music is amazing in tough times.. can help get the emotion out of you.

here's a version that has the correct final structure (I'm going to have to do a club mix without intro) and with the vast majority of compression issues fixed:

think it sounds pretty good

So i ended up working some more on my track i posted earlier. Tried to improve the percussion after Optik's feedback & also added some synths & ended up completely changing the ending part (still not 100% happy with it). Let me know what you guys think, are the levels ok/balanced? Working with only headphones at the moment. Thanks for listening:

yeah i like this track, nice vibe - i would prefer the kick to have more thump and cut some of the bass instead, also i would bring the clap up a bit more

cheers man, was thinking that about the bass drum, it's going to involve some complex routing to get it back to being chunky as it's existing in the attack of the master compressor (hence lack of tail)

will give it a go tonight

cheers
