I've been meaning to watch this for a while now, it looks awesome. I may have to bump it up to the top of my list of films to watch.

..... after I've finished watching Sunshine again, of course.

It's one of my favourite sci-fi films. It's a shame it didn't get the recognition it really deserved.

I tried to watch Sunshine but Amazon Instant was being a little shit.

Can Amazon Instant stream films in HD?

If not, forget watching it on Amazon and get yourself a blu-ray copy and play it LOUD!

Posted by Vector A on Feb-11-2012 23:24:

Yeah, Amazon streams are high quality. Unless its stupid autodetect feature falsely claims your connection speed is fucking 330 kbps, lol.

Has anybody seen this? Apparently it was out in 2010 at the Tribeca film festival, but just now coming to national theatres.

Watched Safe House tonight and already regret it. Wow that was awful. I found the direction and cinematography to be poor at best. It aimed at be a tense, taught thriller but was nothing of the sort. Some establishing shots included the typical "[day of the week][time]" stamps, but those were rarely helpful. "Saturday, 6:43 AM" doesn't mean anything to me when the last time stamp came a full 30 minutes prior and the entire time between was filled up with non-stop action (some of the scenes were disorienting, even), and I can already see that it's morning by the light the whole shot is bathed in.

The ending really dropped the movie down a notch in my book. They tried to answer ever single question with it, and we all know how tedious that can be - sometimes less is more.

"Shut up and Play the Hits"

for those who are LCD Soundsystem fans. I think this will be a great documentary.

Looks like this thread is also getting infested by elitists and hipsters.

Anyway bruvs, I got the hottest recommendation ever for you: Attack the Block!
I fuckin lol'd for 90 mins straight and was thoroughly entertained, too.

This could very well be the best movie of 2011. Yes fags, it beats Poetry and Melancholia and The Artist and Pariah and Hugo and that overrated crap Drive by a mile.

I watched this last night, a great film indeed.

Although, I felt the dialogues (or lack of) were too sparse for most of it, but I know it served to increase the tension in the film.... and on that basis, it did work.

For those that have watched it, I hope you know what I'm referring too.

Either way, I highly recommend watching it.

My only issue with the film. Those extended silenced just felt very try-hard imo. Aside from that, I enjoyed it.

Just saw chronicle. Meh 5/10. First half reminded me of the X-Files, the second reminded me a bit of Akira, for some reason.

Don't take this personally, I just like to think that there are no boring movies, just boring viewers who don't know how to watch them.

Hugo is in a way a lot like a Jacques Tati film in that it requires certain active participation from the audience. Especially when it comes to its use of 3D (best since Avatar) where you often have several planes of simultaneous actions that you can focus on in one shot (especially at the railroad station scenes). It's kind of similar to Play Time where you have to find your own gags to amuse yourself. I think Hugo, among other things, updates this concept by using new technology.

Then you have all the loving movie references/references to historical persons/events; the numerous themes the movie employs, like the relationship between humans, machines and film - there's so much to think about.

Very well said. Haven't enjoyed a movie so much in recent memory. So much depth... And Sasha Barron Cohen's phone convos were great comic relief. Amazing flick

Reviews are not very re-assuring. 2001, Solaris, stalker - all referenced to this movie - hated them all, e.g. not my cup o tea.

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Feb-18-2012 06:25:

I agree that Hugo was fantastic. Quite glad I finally got around to seeing it in theaters this past week. If the best picture oscar is a toss up between that and the artist I really think Hugo ought to take it.

For those that saw Drive:

possible spoilers ahead:

Did you notice any similarities/influences with the following movies:

Heat
Taxi Driver
Traffic

?

Posted by EgosXII on Feb-18-2012 09:02:

tinker tailor soldier spy was good as-- Not confusing or complicated, which I was expecting from reviews etc; I quite liked the pacing of it too, how they would kinda have the climax of an event, THEN explain it (rather than every side-plot building to a climax as per usual); it was a nice technique and kept you going "wtf just happened?? Ohhhh, I got ya"

Real Steel was sooo shit

Watched J. Edgar too- Very good! I really can't believe Clint Eastwood; who would've guessed he'd turn into such an ingenious filmaker (I know he's been awesome for a while now, but every new movie I'm still shocked haha)!? I'm not sure how well it'll go down in general; it was really a character film (like ENTIRELY!), and I liked that, but I could see some people not getting into it that much... Content aside I thought the technical side was really interesting and great. The way it cut between times, and events was just amazing; it never felt overdone, or forced, and was always fluid and felt right. I think that's rare for films that do jump around between times and events...
