For me the thing that made the OG soundtrack so good was the feeling of imagination, and this had none of that. The picture oozed imagination which was a shame.

I don't really like Zimmer's contemporary style. He's the market leader in the new style of film score than shuns leitmotifs and melodies in favour of dense sound design. I thought his score for Dunkirk was irritating and devoid of emotional content, for example. The polar opposite of what Vangelis did in 1982.

Again, I haven't seen the new film yet, but this change of musical tack is another hurdle that must be overcome if I'm to believe the hype.

I'd suggest seeing the film before judging the score.

Hans does what he does and he is far more sound design than most other composers (and a lot of other composers use sound design for a lack of musical talent - see Trent Reznor for more details).

He's always been heavily entrenched in sound design, and not so much motifs or melodic themes, although True Romance, Gladiator and the Lion King would be good arguments of the opposite. There's a reason he's arguably one of the top 5 or even 3 living composers, and his niche has been to do something different be it the heavily synth and drone laden arrangements, or relying more on atmospheric tropes than thematic composition.

I will say, he knows what he's doing and when to use atmosphere and sound design over melody and motif. Dunkirk was that way for a reason. Dark knight straddled to the two perfectly. Smillas feeling for snow does the same.

I actually think given that BR2049 is more atmosphere than plot, he got it right, and the thing people keep forgetting is that he was only brought in half way through, once Johannson had failed to deliver a cohesive vision (See daft punk and Tron for more details).

I hated every minute of it, despite not seeing it.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-07-2017 22:24:

I'm literally only seeing it because of the reviews. I'm still deeply sceptical going in.

Posted by Lews on Oct-08-2017 16:33:

I haven't read the reviews, but I heard they were good so I caved and now have an IMAX ticket for Tuesday

Posted by Guest on Oct-08-2017 18:27:

I can't wait to see it on the IMAX screen. I saw it yesterday and I was duly impressed.

Well I must be living on a different planet to everyone else, because I thought it was almost as bad as Prometheus.

So you mean it was great?

Well that apparently also puts you on the same planet as people who think Prometheus was some kind of a dreadful affair, so maybe you just have a different understanding of what counts as depth and good storytelling when it comes to modern sci-if. They can't all be RoboCop, after all.

As for me I'll be seeing it in IMAX tomorrow (along with the extra twenty six percent of image the formatting apparently allows).

i wasn't a massive fan of it, but you take that back!

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-09-2017 08:15:

It wasn't nearly as egregiously stupid as Prometheus on a plot level (although I have some major bones to pick with the central plot device) but it made me almost as angry. I seriously wanted to get up and leave in a couple of places. I was cringing in my seat.

I could write reams, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. More than anything, I didn't think it was a Blade Runner film. Tone, style, genre, moral compass, music, everything. It's a dystopian action film with some nice visuals.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Oct-09-2017 08:34:

its tone/ambience/aesthetic was the only thing i really liked about it (not as a blade runner film necessarily, as i havent seen it since i was a teenager and quite obviously didn't get it). i might have to go re-watch the original. which version would you recommend?

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-09-2017 09:50:

There's barely any difference between the Director's and Final cuts, so either of those is fine.

Posted by Lews on Oct-11-2017 10:15:

An absolutely beautiful film, which makes it even more of a shame that I found it so disagreeable overall. As a generic dystopian film it is not terrible, but the main plot puzzle/catalyst makes no sense and had no emotive power for me (partly because it made no sense). And as the sequel to Blade Runner, the tone was completely wrong. Very disappointing, overall. I suppose I'll have to suffer through another one in a couple years, though, assuming the box office numbers perk up a bit.

On a side-note, I'm glad I saw it on IMAX. As noted, it is a beautiful film and it looked great in that format.

was surprised how well the original had scrubbed up when i watched it the other night. however, i guess i'll just have to accept im a movie cretin. i don't doubt its influence in film and games, but it just didn't resonate with me.

that said, what the hell was admiral adama doing between 1982 and 2004?

Not using Proactiv (TM)?

The original isn't perfect. Dare I say it's even slightly over-rated, at least by those who consider it the zenith of science fiction. It is, however a beautiful mood piece with classic film noir moral ambiguity. It's not a daft action film with kung fu kicks and a cartoon evil capitalist villain reciting his evil plans in lines of fortune cookie bollocks from his subterranean swimming pool.

With a borrowed Netflix login I gave Netflix a try and watched Bright.
Although not amazing and could have been better, I still think it's good movie.
Will is being Will including the humor and does get some decent beatings. I guess you'll need to like Independence Day, MIB and Lord of the Rings to become a fan.
Apparently a sequel has been planned.

Netflix is well worth it if you like series too. My dad, my wife, and I watch Designated Survivor every Sunday, and it's become something of a family tradition.

I also used to watch Grey's Anatomy with my sister, but the damn thing's become something of a Star Wars saga, and won't ever end

I know but that means less internet, less listening music or skip sleep for the reason you mentioned
Star Trek Discovery is on top of my list as I couldn't find some episodes at Usenet.

I picked it up from mom who’s a retired school teacher and a life time grammar nazi.

I watched Salyut-7 (2017) or in Russian Салют-7, as it's about the rescue mission of a Soviet space station in 1985.
I didn't expect a lot, but think it was a surprisingly good movie.

Next one I need to watch is the Japanese Blade of the Immortal which also gets good reviews.

Rumour has it TA 2.0 will support Cyrillic. Until then, I guess this will always be Russian for "D!DoD>>NZN, -7"

Is it like a Russian version of Apollo 13?
